Gold totally encased in ironstone?

Well that makes two of us at least mdv. Yours sounds more promising if it was screaming. Mine was sending a good, if not great signal. But i won't rest until i've at least made a good attempt to re-find it!!!!

It all depends on the host material and volume of gold, but anything over 0.1g will make my SDC chirp a loud tune when flat on the plate. Basalt and very dense ironstone sing nice tunes as well.

A pin head size bit of rusty iron does the same thing but somehow it doesn't quite give the same level of satisfaction as a flypoo spec of yellow. Unfortunately I have tested this audio response far too many times.

Headig out tomorrow to do my bit to clean up Australia of fuggets :p hopefully I will get a chance to test the audio response from a 2oz specie so I can give a better reply. ( I expect it will blow my ears off and possibly overload when touching the plate)

That's also been my experience and why I said 'fugget' and threw away my stone. But now I am not sure ... so will re-find, check and then probably again say 'fugget' and toss it away.

Good luck, and good onya for doing your bit to clear the land of 'fuggets'. Don't forget to post the piccie of your 2oz specie. ;)

Hey Matt, don't take all the gold  Leave a little for me to find when I get back down that way in a few months :D

If it did have a decent amount of gold in there it would give a pretty loud signal though wouldn't it silver and wally?
I better check on that SCROUNGER.

 like Wally said before I'm just speculating as to where I might find some tomorrow - don't know for sure. There's more than enough down this way, as you know, & I only collect a little bit at a time. Sometimes a little bit more than other times :p

It should extend up to Gulgong but that's a pretty good mudmap of our NSW Golden Triangle.

Well i went back out and after a few hours still couldn't find the original piece of ironstone that i walked away on. I did manage to find a few nice pieces of gold though and also this piece of conglomerate? that is giving off a signal on the 2300. Is it best to just smash it up with a hammer to checkout what's inside?

Yeah a hammer will be OK if you having got a dolly pot but put it in a metal bucket so it doesn't go flying of into the yonda when you start breaking it up.if you get desperate borrow one of your wife's kitchen pots and dolly it up in that.its a bit agricultural but I'm trying to think of what u can use that's common around the house that will match the purpose.hope it helps :)

Thanks k man. I was thinking of just putting it into some sort of old bag to encase it and belting the living daylights out of it. It's pretty big, about 150 mm long so it will go everywhere i imagine and require a fair belting to break it up. Don't have a dolly and the second option of yours will probably get voted down by my wife i reckon. :)

Thanks wolf, mate i've got the bug proper. Still waiting for you to come up this way for a day so i can call out and say hello and checkout your 5000.

How about then put it into a bucket of water and let it soak for a couple of days.being conglomerate the clay base will break down and you should be able to crush it up in the palm of your hand then just pan it off.I've done this method a few times when I've brought home a couple of 20 ltr buckets of conglomerate and couldn't be bothered dollying it up and then high banked it at home.worked a treat.

k man, my apologies, i may have given you and others a bum steer with the word conglomerate. It's not clay, its a mixture of ironstone and quartz. I'm no geologist, i just thought that's what it was called. It's gonna need a serious thumping to break it up i reckon.

OK then mate better break out that wracking stick then :D no need for apologys mate no bum steering here just a heap of top blokes sharing story's and passing on shared expiriences and information :) ;)
