gold out of quartz

Hey Luke,
I got onto some quartz that I wanted to crush & sample so I made up a Dolly Pot.

All the parts came from a scrap bin so cost = $0.00

hey how do i get gold out of quartz? :|

is your pop a prospector now or did he do it when he was younger and had these sitting in his shed for 30 years ?

forum members here could tell you how to get the best money for them and you could share a bit of cash with your pop if he is short of money , or if he is a brazillionaire he probably wont mind if you keep it

ps , cash obtained from finding gold is tax free by the way , as long as you dont operate a registered mining business then you can sell the gold and there is no tax owing

if you're lucky you can ask your pop which area he got them from and you can go back there to hunt for more

they have been in the shed for about 30-40 years, there is over 100 specimens, and my pop said have them the tin of like sand/crushed quarts has lots gold in it pity i don't no a thing about panning lol

at least a pan is cheaper than a detector . lol

plenty of youtube vids to learn how to pan

get a big plastic tub and pan over that so if you lose any gold you can pan the stuff from the tub again

see agmans post about the dolly pot or make a bigger dolly pot from a bit of pipe and borrow someones hammer drill if it has a " hammer only mode" without the rotation , you can make a good pulveriser from one of those or from a pneumatic chisel with a hammer end.

I agree definitely don't crush them. Gold particularly in white or rose quartz goes for much more than the weight & gold content of the specimen.

Hi Luke,

I think this could have been one of the best investments that he made, keeping those rocks tucked away for all that time, while the price of gold soared many times over during the past 20-30 years.

I think that the Dolly Pot which Ag Man posted would be great for those rocks. Good luck with crushing them and getting to the booty I'd certainly be going back to where he found those, even after all this time, if I were you.

All cool Gav, I'm still a newbie too mate, I have about 6 months more experience maybe, heh. I thought the same at first about crushing species and melting nuggets into bars (all imaginary thus far), but yeah depending on shape, size, type eg: crystalline gold or specimen in quartz they can be significantly more valuable to collectors.

You're a lucky fella Luke for your Grandad to leave those for you to find. Hope he left you a map or 3 also.

I would keep the specimens as is in the quartz.. better value for the bigger ones

Wow looks like you got quite a collection there, most of them will sell better as specimens for sure, tempting to crush them but how could you they're so pretty
