A friend ( work mate ), of my brothers got an 8oz and some other nugs. Just recently in the Grampians. The 8 was under a log that he shifted the others were near by. Don't know what machine or coil yet or exactly what part. I wasn't aware of detectable gold up there but I guess it could be anywhere.

Be aware of - The Grampians is National Park and heavily protected. To my knowledge Prospecting, detecting is not permitted.

Heck, you can't even use a generator if camping and most camps cost almost as much as a caravan park.

It's no secret there's gold in the grampians (Look at the GPS waypoints for Vic) but yes illegal to prospect in the grampians else I'd have been going there along with I'm sure thousands of SA prospectors being it's a closer option than the GT.

While the Grampians National Park may be off limits to prospecting the "greater" Grampians area/region does have old goldfields and prospecting is allowed ..... just make sure you double check first, if in doubt check with a local.
Stawell/Ararat are sometimes classed as being in the Grampians Region.
Cheers T.

I would be interested to know what region of the Grampians other than Mafeking your friend made this find, the Grampians isn't the right geology for gold nuggets. Mafeking is sitting on a granite bed which has small vienlets which are know to be the only real host for gold in the area. No other mentions have ever been made by many recent geologist than have surveyed the entire park. Taylor did a great job of that. There is a small area with some mineralization near fault lines to the east of lake wartook. The largest recorded piece of gold found in the entire park sits at 5 grams.

Must do something for the ego to tell people about something like this? You just told the powers that be to focus on the area.

at least when they ban everyone doing the right thing we can look back and say thanks to these clowns for f&^king it up for us :N:

Relax - half of the Mafeking goldfield is not in National Park. There are other goldfields (tiny) but most of them are inside the park. The gold is fine at all localities and I would normally not waste my time. Small nuggets have been found.
