G'day all. I'm only new to this hobby, and I wouldn't mind if someone can help.
I was doing some panning for the first time in some sandy/white quartz matrerial and I come across what seems to be gold flakes but there only gold on one side and black on the other. Is this what they call fools gold?
Some of it floats also.
Hope someone can help, cheers mark

Need a picture Mark, could be gold as fine stuff can float if it's the right shape.
Gold colour on one side and black on the other sounds like mica or galena to me - If the area is granite it is a high chance of this.

Thanks reeks, the area has no granite, it's mainly white sand with pipe clay and white quartz.

when you touch one of the flakes if it breaks up it is mica fools gold if you are pulling large amounts it is most likely mica ;)

:( been there Goldmark , theres a few things that get your pulse up but once you get the real thing in your pan there is no mistaking it :D It will pretty much behave different to everything else in the pan :)

get a small piece of lead acts similar to gold practice panning keep the lead in your pan you will keep gold in your pan keep hunting ;)
