For locations use the Minview link, select Add Layer > Titles Administration > Fossicking Districts & zoom into area of interest
just to bump an old post with some new info which has been posted elsewhere since, i think by mbasko,
the new minview actually has all the state forest & Crown land layers now so no more swapping between maps, once you have the overlays setup in minview you can download your selected info and overlay them on google earth or other mapping software/apps (like avenza) to take with you in the field.

You're off to a good start. Finding gold or gems is not easy. If it were everyone would be doing it.
It took my months before I found my first real piece and even that was only .7 of a gram!
Most of us here prospect because we're adventurest and the find is only the cherry on top!

Light recon trips are worthy. And it can be very rewarding to explorer an interested area you have in mind. Some creeks dont change for ages, some change big time just around the bend, and wham!

Once you are happy with a creek, you will soon find an average return for it. Then you learn to stay on or move on.

What are "Former Fossicking Area"s? At face value, the name sounds like fossicking is no longer permitted there (without some sort of consent), but some visitor centres still promote fossicking in such areas (e.g. the first one "Former Fossicking Area No 4" is promoted in the visitoberon website). Are Fossicking Areas a precursor to Fossicking Districts? They seem to always get mentioned together.

The former fossicking areas were just changed over to fossicking districts under newer legislation i.e. Former fossicking Area no. 64 is now known as Yarrow River Bridge 44 M92/0417.
Still open to fossicking if NSW Fossicking Guidelines are followed.
A lot are now covered in wider Shire LGA Fossicking Districts too.

Out of interest , anyone done much prospecting around the freemantle rd side of the Macquarie River about 30kms outside of Bathurst. Always fascinated when driving back via Gowan Rd from Ophir and when coming into Freemantle, can see 5 or 6 quartz reefs running parallel up and over the hills as far as the eyes can see.

Gday wondering if anyone has found gold in the Massey creek area?
Hi, I am only just starting out with hobby prospecting, but am totally at a loss for where to begin. I would really appreciate somebody pointing me in the direction of some prospecting area that is within range of Sydney, without access issues (i.e. not privately owned, not subject to prohibitive leases, etc). I have a home built PI detector & some basic panning kit, so I don't envisage being serious competition, and don't mind trying out somewhere that you have "finished with", if there is such a thing... I see a lot of advice pointing to "Oberon", or "Sofala", etc, but where to once there? Many thanks

IMO from Sydney either Sofala or Hill End would be the best options where you should at least get some specs of gold in the pan.
While the Doug Stone maps aren't 100% accurate & don't always show areas that may need further permission from lease holders etc. they are ok for both those areas.
Sofala has a number of areas that you can access + camp but there are minimal facilities. Green Point is the only area that I know that has drop toilets but no showers. The others you need to be self sufficient. Some good areas for panning around Little Wallaby Rocks/New Zealand Point (Mining Lease on New Zealand Point but still Turon River access), Bathurst Point, Lucky Point, Maitland Point, Ration Point. You can do a bit of detecting around those spots & on Insolvent Hill.
The Hill End Common is a large area & there are numerous areas to detect or pan. Around Tambaroora fossicking area is probably the best option to start out with & there are also a couple of blokes out there who offer panning tours/lessons which can be worthwhile.

I have Doug Stones Gold Altas of NSW and looking at areas for gold can you just pick an area or are they on private property. The areas I am looking at are Bowling Alley Point, South Common Prospect. ......thanks norm

Many of Doug's maps show where the Crown Land is, green shade, (or blue for State Forest which requires a permit - any other areas should definitely be considered private property) but don't indicate the areas that are under lease or management. These areas have the same access requirements as private property - you need permission.
