Gday from the Sunshine Coast!

Hi All, I have an 8yr son who holds a genuine interest in rocks and stones, gems etc. A true blue outdoor Aussie kinda kid, but I (his mother) have no idea about it all! I discovered these forums at work today upon searching Opals. (LOL). I'm just wondering how or where I could lead my son towards enhancing this interest? Is it all mining on here (sorry if my query seems naive)... Cheers :8

I think you've come to the right place as the forum covers all aspects of prospecting and fossicking (gems and minerals included).

There's plenty of info scattered throughout the forum which may prove helpful otherwise please don't hesitate to ask questions, we have some very knowledgeable members.

Welcome to the forum Ash..... Great to see your son shows an interest in both the outdoors and rocks/minerals. Looks like a young prospector in the making. Some supervised time reading the forum threads and watching some members vids (especially some by Balx) can show him the fun kids can have on a stream prospecting.

If he has a genuine interest, encouragement in this hobby could lead to an academic interest in Geology down the track, and at very least an understanding of how the environment and nature plays a big role in gaining self confidence while out in the elements.

If you have any questions, no matter how irrelevant you think they may be, just throw them at the members and they will steer you both in what I'm sure will be the right direction.
