Hi All!

Glad I stumbled across this website/forum. There appears to be a wealth of information on here.

Anyway, I’m from Bacchus Marsh which is in close proximity to Wombat State Forest (Victoria)
I am just a rookie prospector who has done a bit of panning in some of the small creeks throughout the Wombat State Forest with my two young kids for some good success. (They loved it)
With the creeks drying up pretty fast (I know it is only temporary) it got me thinking that I am really enjoying this and wouldn’t mind trying another form of prospecting such as detecting.
Unsure on where to start looking with a detector, all I know is that the area I’d be doing most of my prospecting is highly mineralised.

Looking forward to gathering as much information as I can from the Prospecting Australia team.

All the best for 2025!

Welcome aboard, Boof.

'Highly mineralised' is typical of many Australian goldfields and is a limiting factor for most cheaper detectors. You'll find plenty of info here on PA covering the pros and cons of the many available makes and models. Unfortunately, rushing into buying something which turns out to be unsuitable for its intended usage is an all too common rookie mistake. I reckon starting out with a hire detector is a far better introduction to nugget prospecting and avoids a lot of unnecessary expense and frustration, which can result in people abandoning the quest for gold before they've even properly started.

It's great to hear that you're involving the young ones too. Outside in the sunshine, fresh air and bushland, away from video screens, is a much healthier environment for growing minds IMHO. All the best to you and your family with this new adventure.

Appreciate the feedback grubstake!
It’s all about getting the young ones outdoors mate, even better that we enjoy it also! Best wishes for 2025
