Hi Guys
Just got interested in gold detecting along with my son.
We are in the Melbourne area and intend to give it a go around October.
I have been looking at detectors, mainly in the Miners den.
I want something that's not too complicated, but also not rubbish.
Can anybody suggest a few model detectors around the $1000 to $1500 mark max.
I see heaps of cheap stuff, but I don't want to start off behind the 8 ball.
Cheers Guys

Hi Dodgee and Son,

Welcome to gold detecting, this forum plus importantly the information and skill sets available to you within over time, but I am going to suggest to you with your criteria above, that you might or perhaps should consider raising your budget to around $2000... or more... (although the minelab gold monster 1000 plus others are close to your budget)

The detectors you will be able to pursue as a purchase are eventually not too complicated with actual 'detecting coil time' and the experience you will get from actually going prospecting.

I think you will also be better equipped to (maybe) get some finds which may allow you to consider a return on your initial investment.

But then (maybe) it is not easy. It is the lifestyle, the bush, the serenity and the option of going prospecting that you will also be funding.

As you are in the Melbourne area as I am, watch for my "wilko's week out" post in the member meet ups section where I have invited anyone (sic) to join me prospecting. You don't even need kit to come along initially.... you can hire some cool equipment and try B4 you buy??

You've mentioned October which suits me as I am avidly watching the weather, waiting for the diggings to dry out (which currentl looks like September some time as it is really wet out there atm) therefore October is a great time for me to do a lot more than I am currently..

Cheers,

Hi Steve
Thanks for that, it is very helpful.
I have had a look at the Gold Monster 1000 and watched some Utube vids on it being used.
There are more good than bad reviews for it, I also noticed the minelab has currently none in stock, so it looks like a good seller.
Octoberish sounds good, which area do you normally go, is it a day trip thing or a weekend camping?
Anyway I have plenty of time to do some more research into detectors, but I'm not super rich rich, so 2 Grand is pushing it a bit.
Thanks fo r your help and good advice.

Hi Newbie, I'm also new to this.. and I just bought the GM1000 myself as I have read pretty good reviews about it. There is a guy on YT who does some great vids.. sorry can't think of his name atm.
Stevewilko.. I'd also be interested in a few days out around October if I'm back from travelling north (atm I'm heading to qld)
Cheers
