Hi all,

Firstly, thanks for all the info everyone. I'm an absolute newbie to all this, but after stumbling on this website I think I may have found a great little hobby for my young family. Have 3 young kids and we do a bit of bushwalking, mostly around Bunyip State Park, but was more than happy to see that panning around Neerim is worthwhile. As I'm an absolute beginner, any info about would be greatly appreciated.

My plan is as follows:-
1. keep hunting through these pages for more info to give us the best chance of finding something (I figure this is a pretty high priority if I want to get the kids keen. keen kids=happy dad).
2. buy a couple of cheap pans, prob from aussie disposals nearby
3. head out to Icy Creek I'm thinking, although ideas of somewhere closer would really be appreciated
4. have a crack, get a taste and a bit of experience
5. back to the threads with a smidgen of experience and find out how to improve my luck

Well, that's the plan anyway. I really don't have much of a clue, so expectations are not high. Any tips about what to avoid as a beginner would be very, very welcome.

Will report back on how the first adventure goes.

Cheers :)

Welcome

3 young kids + Icy Creek = spare cloths and a towel

Sounds like a great plan to me

Thanks Wally, and yeah very good point. Wet children could shut down the adventure pretty quickly this time of year.

Play pan some tiny sinkers first ,... 3 in the pan, find three when you finish panning and you know you are doing it good enough to not loose gold.

Thanks for the welcome, all. Cheers silver, great tip for me and the kids to hone our panning skills.

I saw Hawthorn Creek mentioned on another thread as a decent spot just out of Neerim. Not as far to go for the first outing, so might be the go.

Just paid for the Miner's Right. Will grab the other stuff tomorrow and away we go.
