Today I managed to try out my detector for the first time. I picked up a near new Garrett Ace 350 a few days ago. So I visited one of the local school ovals. The oval is an extra field over the road from the main school and is also used by people walking dogs and bike riders. It's in pretty poor condition so it was also a chance to practice cutting plugs and popping out coins.

I managed to dig plenty of aluminum cans and ring pulls, I still need to fine tune the discrimination function to avoid digging kilos of the stuff, although less bits of metal to find next time . I managed to pull out just over $5 ($2x2, $1x1, 20c, 10c, 5c and a couple of 1c pieces) and even managed to pop a $2 coin out using a screwdriver. I still need alot more practice, especially with pinpointing, before hitting the better manicured parks. I also had a target that was reading very high so dug it up to see what it was. Managed to find what appears to be an old lead shot putt. An enjoyable afternoon wandering around only a small section of the field, so I'm sure there's still alot more to find there. :)

Great find there Wadeo. I can only imagine the day that shot put was last used, the ground was very wet and soft and the thing just sunk right in. Can you imagine the health issues today if a school was to allow the students to use a lead shot. The legal suits would be flying everywhere!!!

That's an awesome find. Sell the shot put as a giant sinker for shark hunters ;) :8

At the very least I've started my scrap lead collection with a 2.3kg lump.

You could probably sell it to a shooter who reloads they are always on the lookout for lead!

might be a bit soft for ammo, depending how much antimony it has, car batteries have a better consistency than the softer leads from flashing etc, I've been detecting about 5 months or so and have found about 20KG of lead so far, it's everywhere!

Yeah me too (heaps of lead), I have seen (somewhere) a news program that showed a big old house burning and you could see the lead pouring off of the roof where the gutters had let go. When you find it and it looks like its a nugget of lead it's usually old house fire lead (it lets you know there was an old building where your looking that was most probably burnt down).I've painted a few a really nice gold colour so the kids could use their imaginations.
