the small patch i been working is drying out , with gold the bits found so far in gravel about 100mm to 200mm deep, under 50mm to 100mm top soil . moving outside the window i found a rough 0.8g bit of gold in a lump of light clay (i see these are often called a kinder surprise on you tube) anyone have any thoughts on how gold ends up suspended in light clay and not sink though to a harder layer .eg dose this mean that all ground in gold areas could have gold to be detected regardless of how deep to a hard layer ?

G'day haveago,
I'm no expert, but I find most of my gold in clay and outside of the worked areas. I still look for the indicators ie coloured quartz, ironstone & landscape in relation to old diggings etc. I also look for what the ants, trees etc are bringing up.
I love I when I get a good target signal in the undisturbed motley looking clay. Having said that I'm still a novice but have been finding something most times that I go out.
Btw I'm in NC Vic.
Regards Bullwinkle

thanks bullwingle the clay i found was light grey will start taking more interest in the others

All the shallow deposits in goldfields in Victoria were gravel alluviums sitting on reddish/orange clays.Where the rich gravely ground had been surfaced there is only clay now.Where the ground was exceedingly rich even these red clays were removed and puddled down to bedrock. Surface clays are more prevalent away from the adjacent former rich deposits. These are good locations to look for nuggets as haveago says. Some areas and hills had basalt covering the white pipeclay which contained rich deposits of nuggets. There was also a thin red clay layer containing smaller nuggets on top of the basalt where I found 1/4 and 1/2 oz. nuggets with a detector.
