I'll be under the ground soon but I'd hate to be a young Aussie as the world is going FIFO and soon(we already are) flying in workers from outside Australia , now with a free trade deal with China more is to come , . kuskus get in quick it won't last long until they will fly someone from China to replace you :)

I would give my left knacker to be young again.

The world is changing, we need to change and adapt with it. If we don't we will be left behind to grumble and groan like silly old men.

I for one embrace change as the way of the modern world, good or bad. Like it or not I can't stop it, so why grumble.

Don't listen to the doomsdayers Kruskus, we are a very fortunate country beaming with opportunity for those willing to grasp it with both hands.

I'm not done yet, I can still touch my toes.....even if it is with my balls.

Cheers all ;)

Lol nicely put metamorphic, not gunna give up gotta live the dream even of it works you to the bone. It won't last forever, well I won't anyway :p

I've been doing FIFO for a few years now and love it. I have ask my wife a couple of times if she would like me to get a residential job but she's happy with my roster (2 on 2 off) and she gets her chance to go do her hobbies while I'm at work and off to the goldfields with me when I'm on R&R.
Suits us and I'm sure it suits others.

Don't get me wrong, fifo can be good if you can negotiate a good roster to suit your lifestyle. Though I hate the 14/7 rosters over west, with one of those 7 break days included as a travel day which sucks (so essentially a 6 day break). I worked for a Geotechnical contractor, and was able to do a 21/10 roster, with two travel days from Adelaide to Newman included in my 21 days, as was the single day trip back home. Also had a rostered day off inbetween as I was working over 14 days in a row, so essentially I only spent 17 actual days working on site, but was paid for the three travel days.

The 10 days off was always rostered so that I had two weekends at home, which made a huge difference. Unfortunately rosters like this are usually the exception rather than the rule, so most aren't as fortunate.

When I first started out in the industry, 10 weeks on and 2 weeks off was the norm, 12 weeks on was the longest I ever did, but you tend to forget what civilisation looks like after a while. ;)

Very true that a favorable roster plays a big part.

I did the 2 and 1 out of West Angeles, but a lot of others were doing 4 and 1. Not so much the pit crew that I was with, but the other sectioned contractors such as crushing, maintenance etc.

We used to dream of what they termed 'Family friendly' Rosters such as Coyote has where it is even time....... technically your only working six months of the year!

Me being on a Rio Tinto site in the days when Twiggy was expanding his FMG operations, he had trouble getting good operators and so he got smart and offered those working in opposing companies a family friendly roster......the deal was 6 days on, 6 days off for the same $$ as 2 and 1.

Needless to say, we lost a lot of good men and women including my shift supervisor!

Well that is sad. I was looking at a couple of jobs going at the moment on the island

It is sad, and has probably happened more often than publicised over the years. I knew two people that took their own lives in the industry, but both had underlying mental issues which were compounded by doing fifo away from home. :(
