From what I understan you don't need to dig holes at all, its all to do with forces and jamming at the right angle. I guess almost like a trick like the ol beer pot glass 'hovering' in a corner of a plaster wall at a pub ;)

I actually did start thinking along the lines of knitting or making a rope which is possible too depending what resources you have, but then you need to figure out how to get it to the top and securly safe to hold weight....

Just stumbled across this handy thing while we're on the subject

I would calmly reach around to my Back pack and try my phone.
If no reception set off my EPIRB and sit and wait.

You might be in for a l-o-n-g wait, mate. There certainly wouldn't be enough unobstructed view of the sky for an EPIRB/PLB to get a GPS fix - it needs widely separated satellites for triangulation - and it probably couldn't reach a search and rescue monitoring satellite either, unless one happened to be directly overhead. 8.(

Throw the epirb up and out of the hole maybe .

If you cant reach two opposite sides of the shaft you are more than likey not going to climb out , the two stick method of wedging them from wall to wall is the best option if you have sticks , if you do have the items to light a fire save them till day 3 or 4 and maybe if you get desprite enough throw your fire up out of the hole in hope of starting a bushfire to get attention, all in all dont walk backwards is the best tip and dont go alone or atleast put a dot on a map for the wife to alert someone if she wants you back.
Good topic.

Not a bad looking piece of kit that Atom, i wonder how well it holds its edge. Wouldn't be bad for dressing out deer by the looks of it.

Hey Aussiefarmer, no good me putting a dot on the map for the wife. I am the wife. Lol. And i do go out alone with no idea where i will end up.
But its all good. I carry my gps with me.
And now i know how to get rescued out of a mine shaft. :D
Sheryl.

Or use the bones to make your way out. :)
If you have a look in some of the shallower shafts,
You can see where the miners cut climbing pockets into them.
Until they went to deep for that so they then made ladders.

Hang on, 'hovering' pot glass, i know its off topic but could you please quickly explain AR im super curious? :p

Attach the EPIRB to the drone in your backpack and fly it up out of the shaft.. I really only thought of that one then as I've been thinking of buying a drone to take with me so that I can film from above (I'm thinking of making some youtube videos, already ordered a xiaomi yi earlier today - if I don't find gold, perhaps I can make a little Adsense beer money).

Obviously I wouldn't use the drone while detecting but it would be useful for additional footage from above and other angles.

the answer is EASY
Depends in Who fell down the shaft
