Gday all,

Very new to the prospecting world, bought a BH Tracker 4. Took it to the beach for maiden run this morning. First beep within minutes!! - didn't want to keep what I had detected (condom in foil wrapper) :8 . Still, walked along the upper sections, got a lure and $2, maybe the lure can get me a big fish for my trouble. Have been reading through the forum some very helpful info for newbies like me. I did read somewhere that sporting grounds were off limits, behind my place we have a couple of public ovals that some teams paly soccer on - should I be checking with local council to detect around them?

Hi ED end welcome to the forum, first thing first is to learn how to dig discreet holes that leave no trace that you've even dug a hole in the first instance,.. that stops the old girls in their tracks when they want to give you a good dressing down for digging anywhere(that's their thing baby)(ha) as there is nothing for them to see. Next you want to make sure you have a finds bag(bum bag{dark one that doesn't stand out}) to put all your rubbish in(put the good finds in your pocket and only show other people your rubbish) as we don't put the old rubbish back in the hole, we take it away and deal with it,... people ask me if it detects glass when they see in my finds bag sometimes, as I remove visible rubbish as well just to help leave a place better looking than when I started(helps people accept what we do a whole lot easier than if it still looks rubbishy when we leave. Play around at the beach and in your own backyard first until you know that you can dig a good hole that looks nice when you are finished,.. get a good quality thin little stainless steel garden trowel(not the thick one) and make sure its not going to break easily on the first one or two outings,...mine cost around the ten dollars each mark, and I make sure it is of good quality and that I can weld it up when it breaks, cause believe me it will break eventually and when it does and you weld it up properly it won't break again for a very long time(nothing like doing the job yourself). And never under any circumstances drag a shovel around, as it makes the general public see red, they think you are going to rip a place up and leave a big mess(unless you are at the beach),... once again even at the beach, we should do the right thing and fill all our holes, as people could trip and fall, and you would be amazed at the amount of people that get riled up if they get to the beach and there are big dig hole marks everywhere(I'm one of them), doesn't take much to leave it looking acceptable to all.I think people have a preconceived expectation that the beach will look pristine.
Any way I hope this helps you and anyone else who reads it to get a good start in the hobby and not get your fingers burnt off by the old girls(ha).
Cheers.
Silver.

Thanks for the advice silver. I do a lot of offroading and camping, hiking and everything else so have always adopted the "tread lightly" attitude. Good trick with putting rubbish in the finds bag (unit came with one - a black one). I did backfill all my holes at the beach - funny thing was that there were horses on the beach leaving bigger holes than what I was digging. I will practice with digging in the back yard, it is as dry and hard as rock at the moment so will have to get a quality steel tool, and see if the Mrs notices...hehe. Thanks again.
