It's ideometer effect. Nothing more & been proven many times.
A $1million US reward to prove dowsing works was never claimed.
$100,000 AUD, still on offer I believe (for 37 years), remains unclaimed.
In 1980 Dick Smith set up a very fair & rigorous test site for dowsers with a $40,000 reward. He kept the money.
Results were only 13.5% overall on the testing. They set up tests for dowsing on water, brass & gold allowing "specialist" dowsers for each different material.
The dowsers believed they would have at least a 92% overall success rate prior to the test - they failed.
It doesn't surprise me at all when people that have been involved in locating water, gold/gem hunting for decades or qualified plumbers locate water/minerals/pipes etc. within their area of knowledge, claiming it's the dowsing that does it, but fail to understand their own subconscious understanding of the ground/geology or infrastructure that drives their ideometer response.
For example most people that have a basic understanding of plumbing could reasonably guesstimate where pipes run in relation to things like water mains, garden taps/water meter, position of bathroom/s & kitchens so why would it surprise anyone that an experienced, qualified plumber can locate them "dowsing" with accuracy.
I'd be more surprised if say a plumber who uses dowsing for pipes but had no water bore locating experience or gold/gem knowledge used dowsing to locate water aquifers or gold/gem deposits with a higher than normal percentage of accuracy i.e. over ~75-80%. But that won't happen as they will say I'm not in tune to that type of dowsing - the real issue is there's no knowledge or expertise driving their ideometer response.
There is no scientific evidence supporting dowsing as something divine or a direct physical reaction to a specific mineral/compound/element etc. but plenty of scientific & psychological evidence supporting ideometer responses/effects.
Edit: I don't doubt that dowsers believe they have a "gift". I just don't think they fully understand their own knowledge of the specific areas they target & how that subconsciously drives ideometer responses.
