There's water in the creek "in parts", was up for an hour or 2 last w/e to check it out. Found lots of holes from highbankers earlier in the day. Walked upstream a fair way testing along the way for very little. Found a great looking crack in the bedrock, dug it out then carried the dirt in pan for miles back downstream to some water, panned it out and there was absolutely bloody zip all in it. Dug in one of the recent holes someone else had been working near the crossing for a few fly **** specs. Also motorbikes zipping arround everywhere including up the creek itself. GL!

Yep, just follow Forest road, that will lead you straight to the old diggings, and to the campground, on the creek. I was there Monday morning (didnt get any gold, just lead) the old workings have been flogged pretty hard, so you may need to venture out a little further. there is still gold there, you just need to work for it.

UPDATE: Went out to Dollys Creek and did a day on Orchard track, then another day on the main areas. This area is huge! ...and unusual, I found river wash on hill tops? and endless tracks that were more for a motorbike than anything else.

If you are heading there, I'd 100% suggest a 4WD to get off the main track and if you are looking to investigate the hidden areas, take your dirt bike, an absolute MUST! Do some research and take a GPS to find your way OUT.

As for the prospecting, still getting targets, lots of targets - deep, shallow, on heaps, hill sides and open flats. Our scrap metal collection is still growing, with most of it is old timers junk - a good sign, now just need to find the gold they missed. A great time there, varied terrain - everything imaginable if you look around.

Dolly's Creek was not considered a big wage earning diggings - there is a very good sociological book written on the place. That's a big however. It was considered a wages earner - that is, they 'scratched' out about an ounce a week to live on. At the value per ounce at the time, that was usual. Never let 'poor mans' workings put you off - they do tend to get over-looked.

see google books link: http://books.google.com.au/books/about/Dolly_s_Creek.html?id=31agAAAAMAAJ&redir_esc=y

Fair comment - I know of detectors finding 1 oz nuggets there

YES people, for those more adventurous types, I could almost guarantee there are places that haven't been touched since the last rush there. It's just impossible, once you are there, you realize just how large and diverse it actually is. And.... some parts are very inaccessible - I mean walk-in only. From Orchard track to Forest track there are many great areas to investigate.

Now given that it was never considered a RICH gold field, don't expect to walk out with an ounce on your first visit - but don't discard the notion either! If you enjoy getting out in your 4WD AND don't mind getting the paint scratched (a lot) - try it out, tracks aren't ridiculous, especially in summer. If you like dirt bike riding or trail riding in particular - this place is gold, pun intended.

A couple of older YouTube videos by a well known Victorian prospector gives you a good idea of whats around. Do some more searches on YouTube, gold is SILL found there. He has also made some pretty impressive maps you will see on the forums.

I have been to Dollys Creek twice and really did not do well, near the camp the creek just seemed sandy and there was one spec in a number of test pans, went down a side track off Dollys Creek Track (even though the motobikers waved not to do it, as I have an old Hiace) But same as the camp area, just sandy material. I even had a go with the Gold Monster ...... 20 hot rocks and two 22 casings later, I gave up and drove to Slaty's. I would love to read some advice/opinions in regards to panning this area, thanks in advance!
