Hi to all the learned mineral buffs. I am trying to find out what this may be. It was found near Pentland, North Qld. It weighs 16.5 grams with specific gravity of 9.17 as tested at James Cook Uni. The lecturer at JCU was unsure as to what it was and said the SG test could be a little out because of the porous nature of the specimen. He also suggested an XRF analysis. It is a very pretty piece of something :/ anyway thanks for any input Cheers, Rick

spectroscopic analysis would tell 100 %

dont they have one there ?

is the area known for silver and gold in the same location ?

the SG is pretty high for silver gold mix ( silver alone is 10.4 ) unless there is bubbles inside it

i have had spectroscopic shoots done before at foundries but they charge $ 100 a pop

Can get XRF reports done by a guy in Aus on ebay for around $15 most of the time. He sends you a pdf report of exactly what's in it and if you pay the postage can send the specimen back to you. I've only dealt with him once, but had no problems and only took a few days(most of the time would have been waiting on Aus post).

Given colour and weight, id be leaning toward an electrum specimen. Given the area is known mostly for gold but silver and copper occur in varying amounts all across north queensland.
The slightly greenish tinge looks like copper thats oxidizing slightly.
A proper analysis would be needed to tell you the exact composition.

I suppose you could always melt it, make no difference if it wasn't gold anyway,... and if it was you would get a better go at its SG maybe. I don't do gold myself but that's what I would do if it was me.

I had it tested and it came back Au 89.73% Ag 10.64% first test. Second test Au85.92% Ag 24.17% so I guess it is a gold and silver mix or does that mean it is a lower grade gold? :|

Electrum, it's still Gold, just with a bit of Silver, slightly lower grade but a great find..
