A waste of time is time spent not profitable, educational, enjoyable, spiritual & physical. This thread has proven to be many of these - no?

Much easier method Casper:
Get Dry Weight of Specimen
Put small tub of water on your scales and tare (zero) it out.
Suspend specimen in it using cotton thread (not touching the sides or bottom),
The increase in grams is the volume of the specimen in CC as water is roughly 1g/cc.
Divide the dry weight by the volume and you have the speccies SG.
Use anyone's formula to calculate the gold content.
I can provide if you want.

So the average gold purity for W.A nugz are 92% which equates to roughly that of 22karat
Therefore the SG of the gold in Twapsters speci would be 17.9 grams/cc
Given that the question asked was the SG of the Gold in Twapster's specimen, it doesn't matter the purity of the Gold alloy in the specimen. Gold's Gold, whether it be from Vic, WA or Venus. Yes the metal alloy SG will vary, but the SG of the Gold remains at 19.32g/cc.
PS: (for Casper) I love spelling Nazis. Their great when there at they're best

Is a 9karat ring a "gold ring"?
When you detect a nugget, do you detect a "gold nugget"? Or do you detect a gold-copper-silver nugget? ;)

I hear what you're trying to say Bigwave, hope you win bud

I don't have an entry Reeks. Just here for the intrigue. What's the general build-up of WA Gold? For the Vic GT, it's generally around 95% Au and 5% Ag with traces of Cu.

Yep TheDuck,
I have a Ronny pick at my disposal now and Crickey it's a good one.
Light to carry and goes through hard packed ground like a knife through butter. :) :)
Very cherished part of my kit I can tell you. :D :D

Its getting closer to the end of the comp, when all will be revealed by TathraDJ! I have enjoyed all the theories put forward and watched the guesses with interest.

All I can say is the SG test was done as close as possible to what a normal bloke trying to obtain an accurate "how much gold is in this speci" result of a piece of quartz with gold in it. No tricks, no curve balls, just a genuine attempt. Ok maybe I'm not a normal bloke!

All I can say is some guesses have been closer than others. lol

I hope any interested nsw detectorists have had their say in response to the Copeland Tops proposal.. see Sinhof's thread in the General Chat page. Only a few days to have your voice heard. Hopefully it will open new opportunities for us goldfields starved easteners.

Ill check it out! Yep I do wish we had easier pickings here in NSW. I dream every day to be back in WA it seems the last place an ordinary bloke can have a crack. I don't get the fact that there are so many farmers out there who aren't in the slightest interested in prospecting the vast lands they supposedly own outright, they even own the river....... yet its off bounds for simple folk like us to wave a detector over it, or camp near it and pan it. That hurts.

Atleast in WA you can do the right thing and still get access to the sort of land I'm talking about above. So def support APLA in Western Australia. Just like NAPFA here,......did I get my letters right????? I need to keep my membership current!

Treasure it while it lasts cause its getting harder and harder.

Please excuse the rather heavy editing going on in my post people. :)
This does take a bit of setting up. :D :D
