Hey hunting the yellow, sorry I didn't realise your comment about catching up. What's your idea?? I wouldn't mind punching a hole through the basalt haha, they recon it was very rich in the sebas area. Although I have found good gold in reefs the old timers worked... Literally could see it in the reefs down there... Maybe the candle light wasn't that bright back in the day... Anyways pm me with your idea's, as for the bloke who started the thread, what area are you from? I would maybe hire a decent size trommel that will chew through your gold patch :D

Good question Wishfull, I'm sure everyone's definition would be different but the good gold I'm talking about was just shy of 10grams for two fist size chunks of Quartz smashed out of the reef. Bad gold as per my definition would be crushing a ton of gold bearing Quartz to only recover a few tiny specs of gold... or if we are talking alluvial then I wouldn't set my gear up for anything less than 20 colours a pan... Maybe sometimes 15. Anything under I personally would consider "bad gold".

I shot out this morning to have a quick test pan before being in bigger equip so this is what I consider good gold... Well that's if it pays consistently... :D

Thanks Atomrat, nah that hole is long gone. That pan come from a spot inside Ballarat central but made sure you couldn't see the landscape in that picture so not to give my spot away haha

shot back out to creswick, after going down a deep lead and finding a vain full of gold that the old timers missed. obviously were only after the alluvial down deeper. So after some quick calculations I started opening up my own shaft which i hope To find the reef! Will post more pics as I go deeper :D

Oh I didn't realise you commented about the white pipe clay pennyweight. Clay isn't a ancient water way obviously, I was talking about the material on top. That pipe clay acts like bedrock in this case and that's why it has such a high consentrate of gold at the bottom of the river system (on top of the pipe clay) the old timers use to take about a foot of the pipe clay as well when they worked it but I personally haven't got anything that has penetrated the pipe clay...
