The ace350 detected a lump of what looks like iron ore in my front yard. Is this common?

Just a guess but could it be a piece of a meteorite ? That top part of the rock looks like a crust which is common in a meteorite , does it attract a magnet ?

Looks like some of the photos of iron ore, on google images. Yes it sticks well to a magnet. Also the my pinpointer beeps faster, on certain sections of the rock.

I agree with Hiluxlou,
It looks too dense to be iron ore and I don't know of any iron ore deposits in Newcastle, I could be proven wrong.

Here is a site that explains how to test your rock if you suspect it is a meteorite.

http://meteorite-identification.com/streak.html

How funny would that be if it turns out to be a meteorite.

Blokes travel all over the place to detect meteorites and you find one in your front yard.

How big is it?

Let us know how you go.

I will do the tile, and file tests later today. Was thinking it was iron ore, or even slag. Actually I am leaning towards slag.....but who knows!

Rubbing the rock on the back of a tile left dark brown streaks on the tile. Filed the rock, and it left dark brown on the file as well. The rock has shiny silver streaks in it after filing, but they seem to go brown quickly, iron oxidising?
