Looks like the end of an opium pipe that many Chinese miners were addicted to smoking.

Yeh I thought opium pipe at first, but then I doubted whether a Chinese item in the 1800s would have English text.

Well I have changed my mind now, being that small and a little ornate and spelling in English,
could it be on the end of something for a Lady that needed to be tied ?

Like maybe a hat or bonnet string or lace ? or something for the waist line tie ?

Not from a pipe or cigarette, definitely not musical now.

I think it is an opium pipe cone,it looks to be about the right size.The 3rd photo in the original post even appears to show some residue inside the cone.

Sterling silver was commonly used in fine cutlery sets. I wonder if it could be a ferrule for where a bone handle joins the shaft of a carving fork or cake server. Maybe some young fella was using mums heirloom cake server as a prospecting tool and broke the handle off.

But as I believe that no one is really sure about this item, I am looking for clues and suggesting things.

Having done all that, and even reviewing your own reply as to what it is,

I am happy to accept Silver's, Golddiggerart's and your ID of the item, mainly because I can now show others 'that proof' with a high degree of confidence.

If you had backed up your own ID of it with some images, we would all have a better agreement and gain knowledge from
your experience.

I reckon that should be enough proof, what do you think ??

The extended mouth piece is broken off of the small end, and the pattern is almost exact so maybe it is a Dunhill brand item ?

the problem is I saw them being used when I was a kid by the ringers on our property and I have had a look around the old quarters and haven't found one yet but their will be one somewhere just have to find it :Y:

No doubt you will find one eventually, but they seem to be quite a personal item as if they are showing 'class'.

WOW thanks Greenhornet_au!! That's definitely by far the closest match we have, and undoubtedly proves what I have is indeed a part of a cigarette hold -- and more than likely made by (or at least inspired by) the Dunhill "Topedo" range.

I've done some browsing in google images with the search "Dunhill Torpedo Cigarette Holder" and there are a lot of close matches, though the slight difference being that mine tapers down to a point and then the small neck extends out at a consistent diameter... whereas the Dunhill Torpedos taper down right to the tip. Perhaps mine was an early prototype, or a cheap copy?

Also is it possible to get mine looking shiny silver again (any tips on how) or do you think it was deliberately made that darker colour during the creation process?

I think I would put it into a jewellery tumbler to polish that up, it looks like it has tarnished well.

The tumbler with the right media will also polish it internally for you, clean as a whistle.

No doubt someone will come along to tell you how to do it without the tumbler, I just know that even the oldest cruddiest
brass cartridge cases come out shiny and look like new after an hour, all the detail and polish without scratches.

One of the best investments I have ever made.

There is some discussion here about the Ebay version (I will be buying one of these soon for Kato)
I know some guys with these that are VERY happy for the price.
But you need to hit Aussie Sapphire for correct metal media and polish compound.
