Snow has nearly finished, couple more days to go (another dumpage tomorrow).
Found this on the western ridge of Mt Curruthers while watching mates drop the little peak (The Sentinel) behind the quartz outcrop

It would be good to be able to get up there in the mountains again. Once upon a time when i was under 50 yrs of age i was still able and spent many hours discovering all parts of Australia. Cape York, The Gulf Country, Kakadu, WA coastline, Sturt Hwy. S.A, Vic, NSW. I haven't visited Tassy yet but will in the next 1-2 yrs. I wasn't into Gold as i am now but i would like to do it all again--very slowly.

Looks like good trout waters too, any fish around?
Trout fisherman's wet dream, miles of rarely fished waters.
GT - I also take my hat off to our pioneering forefathers in both stinking hot deserts and freezing cold mountains, all done with rudimentary knowledge and technology. Maybe one day KNP will look at the fossicking model at Abercrombie and realize the areas they control also contain MINING heritage and aren't actually that pristine or unique. Happy to give visitors to area the local heads up, as Jindygold says - these mountains are full of gold

I cant think of anything more appealing than prospecting around trout waters! Rod in one hand, detector in the other and pans in the backpack. My fave camping spot is thredbo diggings however never prospected there only fished....not even sure if prospecting is allowed there but beautiful country.

Hey Twapster, rode the new bike/walking track from Thredbo to the ski tube at Crackenback yesterday - the fisheads will love it. It allows easy access now the entire river from DHG to down near the hatchery - froth on you trout fishers.

We certainly have a variety of landscapes to enjoy across the length and breadth of this brilliant country I call home

So I got back out to that high plains location last week (above 1300m) to do a bit more 'research' around some very old workings and well I was totally stoked and felt like it must have been in the old days. After scratching around checking out the creek, the leftover spoils/mulluck heaps etc without much luck I literally scrapped up the top inch of bare topsoil and bingo. Thought I'd better go deeper - nothing, all in the top 2 inches. As the temps up here are still warming up the frost hore allowed me to just finger scrap the dirt into the sieve. Sorry no photos as yet - only bug poo anyway but hurray its another Snowy mountains location for Au gathering.
Twapster - juicy big trout up there too - in tiny little streams

The trout upstream were happy but I think the ones downstream were a bit pissed at all the dirty water I fed them - briefly. The lake is fishing well too.

I know its not much to look at but it all came from the top inch of soil and it represents the possibilities of a long forgotten workings in the mountains being productive again, well at least for me
