G'day all, my Dad just gave me a case with his coin collection. Mostly British coins though a few from other countries as well.
The bulk seems to be circulated coins mostly copper and mostly early 1900-1980. With a few from the 1800's but in bad condition. With a few nice silver commemorative coins with box's, and a token or two. Don't really think there is much value but will check some prices out when i get a chance.

As a lot of the coins were loose and rolling round, i roughly grouped them up and put them in satchels to try and keep the air off them. My first instinct was to clean them up, but after a quick glance online, it seems that that is the wrong thing to do, as it can decrease value?

Just wondering if anyone here keeps coin collections and if so how do you keep/store your coins? Not looking to show them off just want to store them without any more damage.

Depending on there size, people buy tubes which are airtight and can stack the normally i groups of 20 or more. Unless they are coins of value, bagging them would be fine and shouldn't damage them if your not handling them all the time

In general I would say that there is nothing of any value in there, but... you never know.

Correct don't clean them. It is called patina and an old coin should look like an old coin. This is mainly for good condition and rare coins. If they are not worth much then go ahead clean them up show them around IMO. It would pay to know what countries had silver coinage and what years. If you have old stuff there could be some silver and this can add up pretty quickly.

Look for a copy of Krause World Coin Values you should be able to get one online at a fair price somewhere.

Rarity
Condition

But in saying that a common fantastic (Gem, UNC) coin can go for a good amount as well. Post up a few photos and I am sure someone can give you an idea.

Yeah post some good pictures, just make sure they are not GPS Tagged Photos when you take them. And if any of the coins have green crap on them keep them separated from the rest as that stuff grows onto good coins and ruins them !

There's absolutely no need to worry about GPS Tagged Photo's as the Forum automatically strips this information out of images during the upload process. Many image sharing websites do the same these days including Photobucket, Flicker and Facebook. Just though I'd mention it as I don't want people stressing over something they shouldn't be.

Cheers,
Nugget

Thanks for the replys, as i said i do not think there is anything of much worth from what i have seen. Looks more like a small change collection ;) I just did not want to damage them any more. I saw a few green bits on some coins so i will get them seperated. Ill take a few pics later.

Thanks Nugget(now I know) I'm like an old computer,......I lag.

Hi shivan.
Make sure you have a look for mint marks or variations on your coins.

I had a second look through my coins recently and found a couple that are slightly better than I originally thought.

Like this 1915 Aus Penny with the Heaton mint mark under the scroll.

That's one mighty nice looking coin there Stoney, the detail is great!
I'm assuming you didn't pull that one out of the ground :p

Nah, I didn't pull that one.
But I did pull this 1926 that comes close, it still has a streaky bit of lustre or something going on.
