Carats and points

G'day
Wondering whether any of the wiser heads can explain "carats" in relation to gems , I'll take a punt and guess "points" has something to do with the cut of the stone ?

Five carats =1 gram
100 points = 1 carat

Cut of a stone can be defined by shape and number of facets, as well as colour, clarity and how much it weighs. That's all I got.
