Went out to the flat to try my luck on the Queenbyane river but there was no water, while stomping through the forest found this little ripper. Might have to invest in a metal detector ;)

Nice. I sometimes head to captains flat as I love the history of the place.
I once knew an old timer who was a born there. He told me much abour the flat history and the gold rush days.

Hi I recently move to captains flat nsw, and I'm interested in doing a little hobby fossicking while bush walking.
I'm not sure what type of land zone the bush is along the molongalo river is, and what type of permit I need.

Any info would be great

Cheers Jen

Hi Jen

There are three types of forested land there. State Forests (including Tallaganda SF) some areas of which can be used for fossicking, National Parks (including Tallaganda NP) where by and large fossicking/prospecting is not allowed although there is a policy on fossicking https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/...-and-protected-areas/park-policies/fossicking . The third area is a reserve - and sorry I can't recall restrictions that apply there but you'll come across them on the National Parks and Wildlife internet sites. There is also a reserve and national park to the west.

This link https://www.forestrycorporation.com.au/visit/activities/fossicking leads you to the State Forest policy and also has links to maps which show where fossicking is and is not allowed. You need a permit.

A declared Fossicking District exists south and somewhat to the east of Captains Flat but you'll need to get onto Minview https://minview.geoscience.nsw.gov.au to see the extent. A Fossicking District means you do not need mining company approval to detect on an Exploration Lease.
