Hi everyone! i'm researching entry level metal detectors as a first timer.i have been impressed with both the mine lab 750 and the garrett at-gold.their websites look very professional and appealing.i dont know anything at all about prospecting but have always been interested, my kids are waiting on me to get started! i have had a look at the cheapies on e-bay, are they worth a look? I should introduce myself! I live in Salt Ash, N.S.W. near Newcastle and Nelson Bay. I am starting from scratch here your knowledge and wisdom will be appreciated very much. hope to meet many of you one day! Regards, Steve...

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum. There are quite a few members in your area , that detect on a regular basis in the Newcastle district, including Nugget , the site Administrator. So you should be able to collect a tonne of info that will help with your decision, Cheers Paul

Hi Steve, welcome to the most friendlies prospecting forum around.

The Garrett AT Gold and Minelab 705 are top performing gold detectors within their respective price range (under $1000), and both are from leading manufactures. So with that in mind It's really going to come down to what sort of detecting you're planning on doing and your budget.

In regards to buying cheapies on e-bay, I would stay well away as you're bound to be disappointed.

Check out some of these topics as they might help you make your decision;

Minelab https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=34
Garrett https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=33

P.S. Neither of these machines are "entry level detectors" :p

Cheers,
Nugget

Welcome to the forum Steve, I'm sure the info and advice you're looking for, when it comes to detector choice, will become much clearer once you skip through the forum threads.

There's many members using a wide range of detectors for both "Gold" and "coin/Relic", who can give you personal insight as to which ones may suit your individual need. Best of luck and look forward to hearing about your adventures.

Cheers Wal,

what a great forum, makes life a lot easier speaking with people who know their stuff and are willing to share, i'm catching the gold cold!!

Hey Rocketman,

Do you know what type of detecting you'll primarily be doing? i.e. gold, coin and relic etc

And would you also know what sort of ground you'll primarily be detecting on? i.e. parks, beach, ironstone rich etc

Lucky last, will you be detecting at night and / or in and around water?

This information will help to identify a suitable detector based on your needs.

Cheers,
Nugget

hey Nugget, i am interested in relic detecting, but i suppose a good alrounder to learn all aspects would be the best for me. this includes day and night. am i asking for the holy grail! Regards Steve.

No worries mate, the reason for asking is some detectors are fully waterproof, some have a backlight for night detecting, some don't handle certain ground conditions etc etc. So it's important to know what and where you're going to use it for before making the purchase.

Have you looked into the AT Pro at all? It's well suited to relic hunting, more so than the AT Gold and it's cheaper http://www.garrettaustralia.com.au/products/AT-Pro-International.html

Sorry if I've made your decision more difficult than it already is, I just want to make sure you make an informed one :)

Cheers,
Nugget

dont worry, i'm not rushing in, i am taking my time, all this info is going to good use, it all depends on the trouble and strife, ha!

I'm looking at getting into gold detecting too. I was looking at entry level detectors but thought I might go something a little more expensive like the Whites TDI Oz series. I'm just waiting though to see what Walnliz make of their new one first. They are more expensive but I'd prefer that than to walk over the same ground twice.

Hey dude as a person who made the mistake of purchasing an "ebay cheapy" the only advice i can give you in that regard is don't waste your money, cause that's all they are is a waste of money... Lucky to find a bottle cap 2 inches under the surface :|
