I can see what look like quartz crystals growing on the front side - does iron or occur in conjunction with quartz crystal growth?

I would say it's more than one mineral - what look like quartz crystals growing on some sort of matrix.

Joao, you've probably seen more iron ore than I have. My brother used to mine it in Western Australia but I've never seen it myself in the field here in Queensland. I guess it's possible for it to come with veins of quarts crystals in it?

Cheers

That is quite an interesting looking rock, looks like quartz crystals in there to me as well. Hopefully one of the geologists that hang out here such as Goldierocks will have a look at it for you.

I get ironstone in conjunction with quartz crystals, but you can't see through it when you shine a light under it like that one does.

I would say its all quartz by the look of the photos. You often get quartz growing in iron rich solutions either staining the quartz red and sometime speckly or going right through it.
