I'm enquiring about early experiences with alluvial prospecting. I'm not in Vic but Google maps shows the steep banks of the Campaspe as described by the first explorers. So it looks unsuitable for panning. But was it possible to detect gold colours along the river? The miners came north from Melbourne but maybe it was possible to find traces when going the opposite way, south from Echuca?

'The section from Lake Eppalock down to Campaspe Weir at Elmore has good pool/riffle definition with some areas of deep water and predominantly rubble and gravel substrate. The lowest section from Campaspe Weir down to the Murray River has a uniform channel shape, sand substrate, abundant snags and shallow water.'

So then, it's likely there are sand shelfs and gravel cavities to hold travelling grains.
