Whats the best free camping ground in the Triangle to stay at which doesn't charge any fees. l was looking at Melville caves or Waanyarra ,are there better ones.

Karri Track 7kms SW of Maryborough is good.

You can camp in State Forrest anywhere, I have, but am self contained in a van.

Waterfalls 12kms W of Avoca, Teddington near Stuart Mill

Get the Camps Australia Guide it's up to version 8 - http://www.campsaustraliawide.com/ I have version 6, but you can get updates online.

or

Wikki Camps - http://www.wikicamps.com.au/ I have the Android version

thanks, l'm looking for a campground that's fairly large so you can have your own space and privacy and not crammed in with the other campers. Can you camp anywhere in a state forrest, anyone recommend a good spot

Try tarnagulla there a place right on the river great place to stay and you can prospect around there too tarnagulla state forest.cheers

If you want a bit of space. try Amherst area Plenty of open ground to get a van in. Goldsborough also is open and camp friendly.

You can camp anywhere in the State Forest.
Just research the area you wish to detect and camp right on it.
Just find some flattish ground and rake clean.
Make sure you leave it as you found it.
We have camped out there for a week at a time without seeing another person - heaven!

Redfin calls it "heaven"
With all that ironbark firewood I would call it "heaven plus".

From our experience in WA, you can spend more time gathering firewood than detecting.

The only thing l would be worried about camping in the state forrest is hoons spotlight shooting at night , is that sort of thing unlikely to happen

Just had a count, in the last 18 months we have camped there for a total 174 days, in numerous trips of varying lengths.
I have never heard a shot.
Only disruption was a few chainsaws in the distance during firewood collection time.

As for firewood, campers in Victoria can collect firewood anytime. So I always picked a spot next to/close to a fallen tree or two.
Just make sure you dig a fire-pit [30cm] deep and rake 3m around it.
Firewood to be no longer than 1m.
And please do not make a ring of rocks for a campfire - rocks retain heat. That is only for the movies.

For me No thank goodness. [I turn it off hahahahaha]
BUT
if you were with telstra, yes, in most spots, you may have to climb a hill here and there.

The Golden Triangle region of Central Victoria sits on the Northern most area of the Greater Central Goldfields region. With a base line of the triangle beginning at the township of Avoca marking the South West point, and then following a line to the City of Castlemaine which marks the South East point, and with both sides of the triangle meeting at the apex at the township of Wedderburn to the North. The region encompasses an area of 9,400 square kilometres and has produced some of the greatest alluvial gold nugget finds in the world up to this present time.

Sorry guys, I must be an even greener newbie... Where is this "gold triangle" area?

Thanks in advance.

David in Sydney
(aka gedanate)

Thats the way Dave , if you are unsure mate just ask away and dont for a sec feel bad. Thats the only way to learn ;)

Thank you, Loamer and GaryO.

Now I can see it's Victoria. I don't know if that's good or bad...

Don't we have enough goldfields in NSW then?

Or is it worth the drive down from Sydney? I haven't done the trip there for more than 20 years!

Cheers,

DavidH

Hi gedanate, NSW has its own "Golden Triangle" :D = Much of the central west eg Bathurst, Sofala, Hill End, Burrendong area just to name a few. Still lots of gold to be found. Best of luck mate :)

Cheers

Waanyarra is a great place to camp,,,,, toilets, water to boil for drinking, and with Eddie living there there is some form of security.
Eddie tends to stick his nose in your business at times but few words settles him down.
