Just abit of advice for the new comers to detecting. I know it might seem obvious but be aware of what style of shoes you wear when detecting as some boots and shoes have metal caps in them and they will play havoc with your detector.

Let me guess, Goldbuzz wore steelies today? lol. Good tip though.

I did that too first time out...

Now i have a pair of Oliver ATS boots with NO METAL anywhere in them. They have a composite hard cap toe.

Nugget I'm not saying anything, but it plays havoc with the discrimination. Like working in the worst trash area ever!

Did that my first time out :/ every time I thought I found something turned out I was standing to close to the coil. The first time I ended up digging a hole about 4 inches deep then couldn't work out why nothing was there when I passed the coil over again :8 As long as I learn from my mistakes in about 6 months I'm going to be a bloody genius.

Yep but worse is when you put a rock in your left hand (wedding ring) ,then I had a pocket full of worthless crap. Took me half an hour to work that out :8

Ohh guys thank you for the laugh, headbut17 your post is priceless. I'm not a detector prospector yet but I will certainly remember this thread when I start, because i will probably do something similar. LOL

Lol, those rocks would have been giving a sweeeet signal with
that ring on. :)

First time i brought a mate with me not only did he wear steal caps, but also a sterling silver ring... Like a jerk i just let him go for the first hour

Question: How good is gumboots against a snakebite?

I have never actively sought out a snake to find out :)

Someone I know who has dealt with them directly advised me to get a pair as they will stop a strike.

No good for tiger snakes though as they will strike up to the hip region and they will chase you as the same fellow told me how he once got chased across his paddock by one until he got to his gun and took its head off.

Snakes can strike up to 2/3rds their length, so it would be a long snake to reach your hip unless you were sitting down. Gum boots are a must around long grass, also handy in rivers. (sharp rocks & broken glass)
The main thing when your out is to make noise when your walking around they will get out of your way if they know your coming and keep an eye out & not just for snakes, frilly neck lizards can inflect big bites and can climb up your body to do so, wild pigs take refuge in old mines out of the heat in daytime.
I am not trying to scare people but we must be mindful we are in their playground. :)
