Australites - Childers Cove

Hey Guys,

Trawling through the internet, and i came across a reference to being able to find Australites at Childers Cove, near Port Campbell.

Anyone ever been down there? I'm keen to check it out next time I'm down that way.

I was down there back in 2011 , was after the flanged button type tektites .
The undergrowth made it difficult to hunt & I found nothing ' not even a broken bit !

Did you look on the beach, along the cliff wall? I've never been there, so any advice would be great.

Yes James I checked out both tops & bottoms of some cliffs plus a few beaches , even asked locals ' most knew nothing but some said they remember a few being found over the years .

They are easier to find around Manna Hill S.A. But being protected you can't pick them up ! same as meteorites in that state 8.(

Seems NSW is the only state that anything if found these days !

Same rules apply in Vic & every other state & territory except NSW that allows the finder to keep them .

Good to know we can keep what we find .
Nice pic of the australite in that article , and Port Campbell is just down the road from Childers cove .

Current thinking is that tektites are not from space but earth matter thrown up from volcanic action and formed as they came back through the atmosphere .

As a kid 40ish years ago I heard about the australites at Childers cove and pestered my mum to take me out there . I looked along the cliff tops but didn't find any thing . I must go back one day for another look .

All good mate, I only knew because I did the rounds with my kiddies, Cranbourne, Murchison....I have a friend who found a piece of Cranbourne Meteorite on his property in Pearcedale, he sent it off to Melbourne Museum and they confirmed it as a Cranbourne Meteorite.....
I did ask if he still had it and he couldn't recall what he did with it... :Y:

Hi James,

I’m a new member and came across your post asking questions about the chance of finding an Australite in the Port Campbell area. It’s unlikely but not impossible. I went thinking they’d be everywhere like they were in the 80’s but unfortunately it has been well searched and they are difficult to find but not impossible. I was lucky enough to sit down to eat lunch and spotted one behind me. So by all means, go looking. Good luck.

we have been finding some in WA this year, it's only Meteorites in WA you can't keep no rules for tektites as over the years we have found plenty,

Ive found some pieces of a flanged button near port campbell. Ive been to the location since and found nothing

I was last there in September 2022 and there was soooo much mud I grew 3 inches taller. It was raining a lot and I only spent a short while looking but I found a small broken Australite. You head West from the carpark to a clearing covered in pebbles 500 or 600 yards away. They are spread over a large area but the spot I went to was out of the coastal scrub and easier to look.
