I should have specified that it was not one contest with three different disciplines, like the triathlon. This was three separate sports at the one meet.

Nope, not events of the same nature - plenty of swimmers and runners would have done that! Three separate sports.
There are a number of instances of Australian athletes competing in different sports across different meets, but only a few cases where an athlete competed in two different sports at the same meet. The bloke I have in mind competed in three separate and distinct sports at the one meet. It would be unlikely to happen these days, because athletes are so specialised.
Australias first ever gold medalist was Edwin Flack, who won gold in the 800m and 1500m in Athens 1896. Edwin Flack is one of the few athletes to compete at the Olympics in two different sports: Athletics and Tennis both in 1896.

TJ gets it, Snowy Baker who "At the 1908 London Olympics, Baker represented Australasia in swimming and diving, as well as taking part in the middleweight boxing event, in which he won a silver medal."
He also "played 26 sports during his lifetime and excelled at most of them:
At the age of 13 Baker was the New South Wales open swimming champion for 110 and 220 yards (100 and 200m).
At 16 he played in the Australian Rugby Union team against Great Britain.
At 17 he was middleweight boxing champion of New South Wales, and
At 18 took the middleweight and heavyweight boxing titles of Australia.
Baker was also prominent at polo, water polo, cricket and diving, and proficient in surfing, fencing, hockey, rowing, yachting and equestrian events."
He became one of the premier boxing promoters in Australia, before becoming a film star and eventually moving to California in the 1920's. After he moved to the US, he acted in some films, managed a polo club and coached such actors as Douglas Fairbanks in horse riding. He taught Elizabeth Taylor, Shirley Temple, Greta Garbo and Rudolph Valentino how to ride, fence and swim.
All in all an interesting bloke.
