It happened in October 1928.

After the event "Baby" was sold to Mrs Vidgen. :/

The baby was an Austin seven which was driven from Sydney to Cape York as part of a promotion for the Shell Oil company.
It was sold to a mrs Vidgen a daughter of Frank Jardine,a pioneer settler on Cape York.
The car ended up being shipped back to Sydney by sea through a cyclone.
It was put on display in Sydney.

Thats right Pr2cv.
Baby was the first the first motor vehicle driven to Cape York.
Owned and driven by kiwis Hector MacQuarrie and Dick Mathews.
They averaged 6 punctures per day using a block and tackle to get across the creeks
and building a raft to cross the Jardine River.
The whole trip cost a total of 13 Pounds ($26) in petrol and oil which yes, they got reimbursed
by the oil company..
They wrote a book called "We and the Baby"

And I reckoned I was doing it tough in 2011 when my aircon packed up 4weeks into a 6 week trip to the Cape :/

Cheers

Who was the first sponsored australian driver to win The Driver to Europe scheme promoted by the motor racing club that operated the now defunct circuit at Warwick Farm racecourse in Sydney

No to all of these

The year was 1964

This driver held that lap record for the class he raced in for a time at Warwick Farm.

The car was an Austin Healy Sprite bug eye ,maroon in colour .

He raced in F3 in the Uk driving a Brabham entered by Promecon Engineering against drivers of
Pete Gethin & the late Piers Courage (of the Uk brewing family )

That's the chap.

We were members. Of the. MG car club Newcastle & I was. Part of his pit crew when he raced in Australia.
The Sprite was prepared in his fathers backyard shed, ported polished head, crank & rods balanced & polished, dry sumped, competition clutch, plus other goodies ,all done on a. Shoestring.
trailered to meetings behind his dad's old chev.
We used to bribe to old bloke on the pit paddock gate with a few long necks if we were short of pit passes.
Some of. The best memories of my life.
