Not sure if many have heard of ACORN (pity about the acronym - was going to say corny). There's generally an ACORN poster in most police stations these days.
The Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN) is a national policing initiative of the Commonwealth, State and Territory governments.
It is a national online system that allows the public to securely report instances of cybercrime online. It will take your statement together with .pdf imagery of photos, screen dumps etc.
It also provides advice to help people recognise and avoid common types of cybercrime.
Cybercrime does not just include hacking, phishing, stealing money and identities and social engineering attacks. It also includes fraud conducted on the internet, including fraudulent sales on sites such as ebay.
Whilst ACORN do not prosecute directly, they analyse the situation and if deemed appropriate, pass off to the appropriate federal or state police who are then bound to enforce ACORN's ruling. I understand that they have very limited capabilities in prosecuting internationally.
They also gather important statistics on the use and trends of cybercrime to predict and combat future scenarios - both domestic and international.
I suggest that this community, in dealing with gold and expensive equipment purchases/sales online, should report such cybercrime to ACORN to take these thieving scum-bags down.
