Hi I need assistance as I keep on finding junk when detecting is there a particular signal that is gold what is the keys to a signal that is gold let me know what I should be listening out for I feel Im in need of some hints tips was a good weekend but didnt detect much as weather was shoddy and unpredictable also I need some tips regarding settings to I run a Gpx 4500 with 12 inch evolution

Ps also what do you look for in an area for detecting just generally

The things I find all the time are nails tacks shavings of steel bullet casings and bit of wire they are the ones and maybe the occasional hot rock

Keep walking and swinging and one day you'll actually put the coil over a bit of gold. Like Mrs Marsh used to say, "It won't happen overnight but it will happen".

Chasing gold isn't as easy as some people think it is. Do some hard yards and eventually you will be able to skite about it here.

Cheers

Doug

First thing would be to make sure you are detecting in an area gold would be likely to be....
Second thing (once number one is sorted) is to dig everything unless you look down and see the bit of trash...even then ,scrape it away and the detect back over.
Third thing would be to understand that its hard to tell the difference anyway between gold and trash...I have hit a signal and gone "yep..gold", only to dig up a nice thin bit of wire. Like wise, I have had a signal and gone "trash" and its gold...
Practice, dig everything and go where gold is....

Can't help you with the 45 settings other than it will vary depending on the coil your using and the ground type your on, the same coil on different ground might mean you need to make adjustments to suit the ground. Other than this simple explanation that is required no matter what detector you are using the best investment you can make is join your local PMAV (PMAV if in Vic, NAPFA in NSW and APLA in WA) or general prospecting club local to your area. Your local State organisation /or local club will have organised outings that will give you the opportunity to gain advice from experienced like minded people. Finding the targets you mentioned above is a norm for most and it will continue. The positive is you know your 45 is working well you just need to walk over the gold and from what you've explained it's only a matter of time :Y: keep at it, it will happen

Took me months of trying to get my first bit, that was three years ago and this year I am over 2.5kg so far.
Put the effort in and dig every signal and you will eventually come good

2.5kg :8 :) :Y:  nice

The general ratio is 100 junk targets per 1 piece of gold . Simple as that, if your in a gold area with old diggings digging lead balls (projectiles)is a good sign as discrimination is only for ferous metals, so if your on the edge of a old digging and getting lead improves your chance of a nugget.

Research.

Most of the trash is on mullock heaps and the like and immediate vicinity. Move further out in the direction your research directs you to.

Dig all signals.

A very important thing to remember when looking for gold - unlike treasure detectors, we are NOT listening for a sound.

What we listen for is a repeatable CHANGE in the threshold. It could be a change in tone and/or volume. The tone can go up or down and the volume can increase or decrease. This is all dependent on the size of the target, the shape of the target, the depth of the target and the type of ground the target is in.

Unfortunately as gold prospectors, we dig lots of junk. That's why at the end of every season of Aussie Gold Hunters there is a small increase in secondhand detector sales as people realise its not that easy lol. If you listen for a sound, you will miss targets. If you use discrimination you will also miss targets.

Great post SP, especially the mention of "repeatable change."

How many of us though have hit a patch of shotgun pellets and you proceed to dig them, one by one, however along the way there is an unexplainable threshold change and a message flashes and you think this target maybe gold, and it is?

Ive been told by coiltek and miners den to keep my gpx4500 as detecting junk is all part of detecting for gold look if gold was found on every signal everyone would be doing it. I was told it part and parcel of gold detecting and that ive got the right detector gpx4500 for the job.

There is almost everyone doing it now already.
In 5 years time hopefully virtually nobody will be doing it and all the gold will be found.
Only rubbish will remain to be found by anyone wanting to look.
