It'd be great to see what you end up making! I imagine you could use a lighter wood if you fibreglass it?
I remember watching a TV show with Parker and Rick who went on an end of season trek/paddle through the Yukon. They ended up building a wooden sluice on site, using a hessian sack and other bits (can't quite remember). They caught gold, pretty cool.
