Ok not gold and I hope I'm not taking this thread off the track too much.

Back in '03 I went and worked at Roxby and stayed at Andamooka where in shop a guy said he had a 30K one. I asked him well can I go get my chipping hammer to see if this is a fake. I got told if I dented the sample I would be liable so I smacked anyway. My gold pick just embedded into it showing it was a fake. The ensuring fight made the papers and the whole shutdown crew got into the melee. We turned that town upside down over night with the shonks and when I went back a year after I didn't have to pay for beers. As all the shonks had gone after we ran out the major one.

So if you see a fake just grab your pick and have a go

I cannot find a single reference to anyone minting gold bars that are not either troy ounces or metric. Very confusing.

Pure gold is so soft (2.5) that you can almost scratch it with your fingernail - it is easily scratched by calcite. So a steel pick would embed into it - so I guess you mean "embed" in some other way?
