You know every time I send an Email or post especially cross country or across the world it always amazes me at the speed of communications these days considering the speed of snail mail....just amazes me. People can type faster than they can speak and there is a record of it -good or bad.
When I started at the PMG there were cord and key operated switchboards still in operation in the suburbs. Older telephone exchanges were quickly superseded by Step by Step exchanges, ARF, ARE11, AXE -now who knows what since i left in 1999.
Jaros 2019

I often marvelled at my grandparents lives and the pace of change that they saw during their lifetime not only with inventions but a changing world.
Two world wars
The Great Depression
The first flight
Space travel and landing on the moon
Communications improvements and Internet
Medical advances, heart transplants
Television
The list just goes on and on

Agree it really is amazing, perhaps the following won't make the list though.

1st great (modern) change would be the industrial revolution with the invention & rapid proliferation of the steam engine powering nearly everything.
The 2nd big change has to be electricity followed up with electronics & the rapid developments in that field.
A close runner up to #2 of course is the motor vehicle in all its forms.
The last hundred years has been a truly amazing century of change.
but in all mankinds achievements & developments, I think the biggest impact as a whole, has been the ways in which we can kill each other en-mass ... & the spread of that technology to every corner of the globe.
sorry to drag this topic down, but warfare makes me sick

Yes! I had a 'great aunt' Polly, born before all but the very rich had electricity, and lived to see man land on the moon!

Remember the images of Dr Christian Barnard and the first heart transplant, the Russian dog in space, the Seagull Outboard to what we have now, even "The Brick" the amazing mobile phone of the '80s to the multi-functioning pain in the ass that I can't get away from, and the throw away society  things used to last, not they're designed, even programmed to fail :(

Imagine a caveman... or leonardo davince or Beethoven.... even Nicola Tesla taking a gander at todays fast paced action packed lifestyle.... where even a ball point pen and a pencil would be an eye opener let alone the large hadron collider. :p

I firmly believe that Facebook has inadvertently created more harm than good.
that coupled with a couple of other social media platforms.
.
back to amazing inventions .. look at how physically connected the world has become with the Jet Engine & Passenger Plane.
the stats around international & domestic air travel are mind boggling.
here's a bit from the Australian government. and we are only a small country (by population)!

If you have ever spent time in remote locations or 3rd world countries a hot shower is up there as one of the best inventions.

The next big thing is going to be the biological revolution.

This technology will truly change the world.

Have to agree, sciences ability to manipulate dna etc to rid the world of disease etc is very exciting. However, how far do we allow this to go, where are the lines which say what is morally or ethically correct. Evolution is slow for a reason.
A very complex and possibly divisive discovery.
