Choke back the outlet with a valve. As long as you don't switch the flow off for a long while the pump will not be damaged.

Latest update guys.

Works a treat with a ball valve, excellent for controlling the flow rate. And so much quieter than using a petrol pump! Just the sound of the water. I didn't realise you could get a valve that was threaded, so it made everything a lot easier to setup. Here's another pic in case anybody else is thinking of doing something similar.
