Aftermarket Batteries For GPX

Thanks for the quick response Jim. Being of the female kind, I find the GPX battery a bit heavy, particularly as I want to attach it to the detector and not be connected to it. The detectormods looks interesting and I appreciate your experienced comments.

Hi there. I have been running an SDC2300 for the past 2 years and just purchased a GPX5000. I find the battery heavy and have been looking for an alternative. Minelab are no longer making the small lithium ion battery and I am wondering if anyone has experience with the Detectormods battery? My plan is to attach it to the detector so I am no longer hooked up to the machine and I use a ProSonic and headphones.

If you go with the detectormods system and want to work more than 4 hrs you will need 2 batteries , also get the 12 volt charger , then you can have 1 charging in the car.
They add a little bit of weight to the machine but more than offset by the gpx battery and the convenience of being independent of the detector.
You do need to keep in mind though that the gpx battery has a built in amplifier, but that should be covered by your pro sonic.
My thoughts anyway.

Thanks again Jim. I hadnt thought about the amplifier , but as you say, the pro sonic should cover that. I use the pro sonic with the sdc2300 and its a great combination. I am usually out for more than 4 hours at a time so sounds like I will need to invest in 2 batteries and the charger. Anything to keep the weight down is a bonus though. Its great to chat with people who have experience. I love this site. Have learnt heaps from it in the past 2 years although these are the first posts I have put up. Havent felt that I have had enough experience other than to listen and learn to date! Again. Thankyou.

I haven't used Mick's battery system. He has repacked my GPX5000 batteries for me and I was very happy with his service and communications.

If you speak to Mick directly, he won't steer you wrong and is extremely knowledgeable on the theory behind the Minelab detectors, I believe he uses the the SDC and GPX regularly on the Vic goldfields.

You should be able to message him directly on here if you have more than ten posts.

I bought one of Mick's 5000 battery set-ups at last years Bash at Laanecorrie. It is very good and I have had no problems. I have the battery attached to my 5000 box cover. I ran a similiar system using camera batteries on my old 2200. I agree with bicter's post - talk to Mick, he is very knowledgeable. I used a similar system on my 2200 and never had any issues.

Minimum 7-8 hours per battery. The newer larger capacity one is a lot more than that.

I've noticed on E Bay a "Super Gold Finder" battery for Minelab GPX detectors sold out of Carisbrook Victoria and "Re Packed" Minelab batteries which you have to supply yourself that are re packed at Nairne in S A, both are about half the price of a new GPX battery, does anyone know if they are as good as a new one?

I'd be careful with the "Super Gold Finder" batteries. These seem to be for the fake/copy versions of the GPX (GFX7000) & I seem to remember that there were some found to be putting out 12.6v awhile ago - meaning that they would be useless for the GPX which is 8.4v/7.2v.

There are a few reputable places that repack GPX batteries or sell kits to do it yourself.
Never heard of any issue with a repack done by a reputable supplier.
Not sure about the SA supplier on eBay but https://www.detectronicsaustralia.com/repairs have a good rep around detecting circles.

I think you would be wiser to just get your own battery re packed by a specialist, that way you know what you are getting back and should be confident that you will get trouble free service from it for some time, doing that would be much safer than taking the chance of frying your detector with the incorrect voltage or being stuck with a dodgy battery that could possibly fail prematurely while you are in the bush, also the original Minelab batteries for the Gpx's has a built in signal booster/enhancer specifically made to run either headphones or external speaker, I don't know if the Super Gold finder ones do that either?, for the sake of the lower price I don't think that it would be worth taking the chance.
