i have been detecting since 1976,the 2300 is a very good machine, for small gold,it will not punch through leaf matter. it will go a lot deeper on solid ground, mulloch heaps.my friend has a 5000 with a 15x12 commander coil, it will pick up, small gold .02 of a grm at 3 inches,it will also go deep on bigger gold, i think we all went for different coils,am now convinced we did ourselves a diservice using different coils, minelab has not put out a dud machine or coils, i have had 12 machines over the years, guess i have been around the block a few times,my cousin found the hand of faith, all the best....regards bob hillier
contacted minelab today re. my 7000, i returned this machine two weeks ago ,would lose targets, then go to sleep, finding no targets, minelab informed me that there was a problem, and have sent a new 7000,have had a lot of minelab detectors over the years, minelab have never let me down, a happy camper again :)

Hi Scrounger,
I've got a 2300 also & love it.........even though I'm an absolute noobie I've now found 29 nugglets from three outings (I won't mention the number of lead shots that I've dug )
Anyway I recently read that Woody was playing around with different coils for the 2300 with some success. In the article he said for more info go to his web site (www.detectormods.....I think) but I couldn't find any mention of the 2300 improvements anywhere on his site....... anyway it may be woth holding off on any purchases you're planning until we find out if the 2300 can be modified or improved.
An SDC2300 with 40% more depth...... now that would be nice :)
Keep swinging.
Rob.

Hey hotrod, 29 from 3 outings is bloody good going I reckon mate, well done. Unfortunately the buck shot goes with the territory it seems. Still trying to convince the minister for finance to let me loose and buy another machine. Leaning towards a 4500 but still finding plenty with the sdc so i'm in no rush. It would certainly be cool if we could get another 40 percent with the simplicity of the sdc that's for sure. Sales would go through the roof i reckon

Be interesting to know how many 2300's have been sold mbasko. For me, as a newbie who just wants to go out and find gold no matter what size, i reckon its the bees knees for its simplicity. If they (we) could achieve a bit more depth with that same simplicity i'd be updating immediately, and i reckon there'd be a few others joining me.

i think the 2300 is a ripper detector, for me though its the same as a 6, 8 " coil on a 4500 with the right settings. beauty about it is open up and its ready to go. downside is depth and coils.

Actually another major benefit that i have seen is the disseminated gold that sdc picks up that you just cant get on any other PI machine.

Bit more depth & a larger coil then I would be updating too. I was preparing to upgrade to the 7000 to be honest but the price, buying a new house & not having the time to justify it all combined so I will stick to the SDC for now & my recently acquired GP3500 for some deeper ground or just a change from time to time.
I would love to know the sales figures.

No disrespect but having played with small coils on a GPX & having found mostly small pieces of gold - some definitely as small as the SDC will - my opinion is you won't replicate the SDC's ability on the small stuff with any settings or coils on a GPX. Yes you can find some of it with them but the SDC is a lot more sensitive to them due to it's different timing which a GPX just doesn't have. It's no fluke people are going over old areas & cleaning up the left behind smalls & as you say finely disseminated specimen gold. It amazes me where I have found some of these on the surface &/or right next to old holes.
The GPX is obviously far more versatile though. Wouldn't go on an extended detecting trip without one or an SDC + SD/GP combo at the least.

How do you find the 3500? Is it getting you deeper and bigger gold?
I have no doubts that it will in the right ground but I am yet to swing it. I am using a telescopic shaft set up & have a few bits/pieces to finish it off. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks - I'll post a pic up when done then hopefully some gold too
It will be set up for deeper ground & depending on conditions will have either the Coiltek 14" DD pro elite coil or an undecided similar sized mono permanently attached.

With specimens "disseminated gold" usually refers to fine or small gold that is spread throughout the host specimen I.e. quartz, ironstone etc. & not conjoined or combined together. In the past VLF's like the GMT were pretty much only picking them up.

Oh, Ok, thankyou mate, i got one yesterday which i posted up on the show and tell section. It had at least three specks of gold showing. I've been getting them quite regularly lately. The ones in quartz look sweet i reckon, not so much the ones in ironstone. But i'll still take em

Hi Bob, thanks for your story, I found your post while searching "Leo English + nugget" and yours was the only search result on Google,.
My father's uncle was Leo English. I'd love to hear more of the story and if you know more about Leo's own story of the large nugget he found.
