Hi looking at getting a reverse cycle air con any clues it must be cheap to run
any advice on what to look for would be most welcome thanks john :)

The 2004 Deakin I'm running costs way too much and bearings are roasted too making it sound like an airforce jet.. but she's still running and holds temp. ( noticable in winter though on the bills for us ) Some of the newer models run a bit more efficiently however but still rack up the bill if used too often or temps over 21C will also boost them up. It all depends on what you are using it in too mate, house..caravan? The small units are for small areas like single rooms or a couple joined by a corridor, but if in an open space the larger units are installed, its mounting position is usually calculated to spread the air evenly by the installer. If its a bendy and multi directional house, they would probably reccomend to install a second as well. This would use less energy as if its large space, a single one would be working hard to keep an even temp.

I'm startingto talk like I know about them, which I don't, but just past experience and what I've seen with them being installed.

Hi old hand,
I am looking at replacing my old split system with a new inverter type. The inverter type split systems are honestly so much cheaper to run than normal split system. We have one in a back room and goes 24/7 at home at this time of the year and is nearly half as much to run. We have had it ten years without a problem, it is an Hitachi. Very quiet also
Just going to do a search for brands, reviews, and of course costs.
Let the process begin.

Old Hand - A little more detail would help us help you, i.e. I failed mind reading 101

  • Is it for you Caravan or your home?[/*]
  • Is it for one room or more?[/*]
  • Where do you want to fit it - Wall, Window or split system?[/*]
  • What use ie as a primary heater/cooler or supplement something else?[/*]
  • How big an area?[/*]

Before even specifying RAC or split you should know this;

Air Conditioning is relevant to the cubic area you want to condition i.e. Length and width of room and ceiling height. It is also affected by building type, insulation - roof and walls, location in the country etc etc. To the extreme, larger house ducted systems can need 3 phase power

An A/C that is too small will never get chance for the thermostat to cut in and will go like the "clappers" all the time and too big is going to use more power and cost more to buy.

I've been involved years ago with Pope A/C and then later in Evaporative A/C design, testing and manufacturing processes.

PS - FYI for all,

The compressor/inverter in pretty well every A/C on the Australian Market today is made in the same factory in China

Thanks condor 22
its a old weather board house insulated roof and walls look at a split system
mainly to heating the lounge and kitchen ,the rooms are 12x18 and 12x15
I have a evaporative cooler for the summer thanks regards john :)

Old Hand - Here is a link to a calculator it is in metric so you will need to know a few things

http://www.fairair.com.au/calculator.size.aspx

It states for cooling but that is ok as it selects the kW for cooling and the aircon selected will have the appropriate heating cycle.

This one is a guide to begin with and is a rough guide to sizing http://www.currentforce.com.au/room-sizing-guide/

I have 2 x Fujitsu splits here is their simple sizing guide https://www.fujitsugeneral.com.au/r...oomwidth=6&roomsize=36&facewest=2&insulated=2

The reason I have 2 is that the main house (solid brick) is ducted reverse cycle, there are 2 extensions one front and one at the back of the house, they are to far apart to do from one unit.

That is something you will need to assess with the layout of your lounge/kitchen as to if one unit will cover the area.

Don't forget that reverse cycle A/C needs the windows shut and preferably doors to be efficient. Whereas Evaporative are only efficient with windows and doors open. The sizing of evaporative is "rule of thumb" enough to change the air in the room/house every 2 minutes or so to prevent build up of moisture.

Google sizing charts for air conditioners, then pricing for the size selected.........

I highly recommend Mitsubishi Electric , good pricing and servicing . Dont go Mitsubushi Heavy Industry , they are a seperate business arm and tend to provide cheaper quality units.
Pm me if u need a supplier as i know a dealer who offers great prices.
