Hi All, Just joined this community. Looks like there is a lot of useful tips and information. Just thought i would share, i have 3 teenagers that have showed some interest in gold detecting/prospecting. With holidays now upon us, it may be a good opportunity to go somewhere to have a go. Any tips of places to try for true beginners :) :) :). We are based in Essendon, maybe anywhere around a hour or so drive.

Firstly, please check out the applicable Victorian fossicking/prospecting rules and regs here:
https://www.prospectingaustralia.co...ecting-regulations-all-australian-states.125/
You'll need an individual Miners Right for each person prospecting.

Secondly, I'd suggest hiring a couple of proper gold detectors, ideally Minelab SDC2300's which are sturdy, simple and very effective. Your introductory post (https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/threads/hi-all.42761/ ), says you've already bought a Minelab X-Terra Voyager, but that is really only suitable for beginners looking for coins, jewellery, etc, at the beach or in park sandpits. You'd be wasting your time looking for nuggets with it in the goldfields.

Thirdly, if you're going to a goldfield where there's water, I'd suggest also getting a gold panning kit. It's not too difficult finding some colour in an accessible stream/river and can provide a lot of family fun.

Best of luck to you all!
