G'day all

As you may know I'm new to this site and new to hunting for gold. So my questions are

When hunting for gold in creeks what do you need to look for eg certain rocks, rock faces, slow water flows, etc
Do you need a permit in Queensland before starting.
Where is the best place to find the information about land rights if there is.
Where can I find if there is gold panned in the area in the past
Last is. What is the differents between an ounces and a Troy ounces.

I'm sure I have more but I'll take a step at a time. Thank you all for your help if you think I've missed some thing important please just say it. Any help is good help for me at this stage.

Ps thank you again. I am located in Gladstone so if you are too and would like someone to join you one day ( tag along ) pr teach the younger generation ( the 80's boys ) please ask

Hi Bradbury88, its great to have you onboard.

In regards to what to look for, have a read through this topic https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=542, it explains in some detail of the various characteristics for gold bearing areas.

For information relating to fossicking permits in Queensland, take a look at the Guide to Queensland fossicking legislation http://mines.industry.qld.gov.au/mining/guide-fossicking-legislation.htm. Here's a quote from the legislation that should answer your question.

What is required to fossick?

To fossick a person needs to be the holder of a current Fossickers Licence. An exception to this applies in cases where a fee is paid for entry onto a mining claim or mining lease, such as at tourist mines, or where other arrangements have been made with mining tenure holders.

Licences are available for individuals, families, clubs, educational organisations, and commercial tour operators for terms varying from 1 month to 12 months. Fees vary accordingly. Licences are normally valid for the whole of the State, although in some cases they may be issued for local areas only.

Licences are available from the district offices of Mines within the Department of Natural Resources and Mines and local agents including local governments and businesses.

If you look under Gold Maps & Resources, we have a couple of Google Earth overlays that might assist in locating previous worked areas https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=49, this topic might be of interest to you also https://www.prospectingaustralia.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1235. Otherwise I'm sure someone with a little more local knowledge might be able to provide you with more specific info.

The difference between ounces and troy ounces is;
  • 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 grams or 480 grains[/*]
  • 1 ounce = 28.3495231 grams or 437.5 grains[/*]

Troy ounce is used a standard measurement system for precious metals while the other is used for pretty much everything else.

Nugget.

Yes that's correct. $/per troy ounce when it comes to precious metals.
