An elderly man has been found dead and tied up in his own home near Ballarat, in central Victoria, on his birthday.
Ken Handford had lived alone in his Springbank home after his wife died more than a decade ago.
A neighbour was visiting Mr Handford to wish him happy birthday when they made the grim discovery.
Police were called to the 90-year-old's home at 1.30pm today and found him tied up in his bedroom.
The homicide squad is investigating the death, and said Mr Handford was last seen alive in Ballarat on Sunday morning.
"Someone's been through the house and that's why we're treating it as suspicious," Detective Inspector Mick Hughes said.
"They may have been looking for valuables or money."

3 letters....ICE
Its the scourge of many small country towns today, and makes these young kids sell their own mother to get the funds needed.
Poor old bugger! I can only hope that he his back in the arms of his wife at the moment.
RIP old mate.....the scum who did this will get theirs, their day is coming!

As Cheese points out, Punishment no longer fits the crime, and in a lot of cases the perpetrator has more rights than the victim.
My wife is a lawyer, and the stories she tells me about what goes on today horrifies me!
Ozziii in correct when he says " it only takes confronting the wrong person & your life could completely change in a matter of seconds".
If someone jumps your back fence armed with a Machete, intent on robbing your home and killing anyone who tries to stop them, including your children...... as a Licensed, regulated gun owner your only choice to stop tragedy is to shoot the *******, your in a whole world of trouble and will most likely spend a long time in jail for protecting those you love.
Self defence is extremely hard to argue in court today, especially when you will be targeted as using excessive force because you had the gun, they had a knife!
Now Im talking years of being locked away with the worst mongrels society breeds, Murderers, Rapists, Drug addicts, Terrorists, violent gang members etc.
For the next 5 years at least, your wife and kids must survive on their own.....they can only come to see you once a week and kiss you on the cheek while your wearing a green jumpsuit across the table from them.
Even if you knock him over the head with a rolling pin, and he dies, your faced with a lengthy legal battle that at best, will cost you many thousands and maybe even the home you love, your car, your boat or your life savings.
Tread carefully!
I always say though....Its better to be judged by 12, than carried by 6.
