Good day all and merry xmas

8 years ive been waiting for the opportunity to come to Australia to prospect in vic, and finally im here. What a great country you lucky people live in!

My brother, dad and i will set off in a day or 2 to the Murrey River (Walkers Flat) first to do some fishing and then head over to the gold fields in Vic possibly Kara Kara N.P. ive done so much research my heads hurts but 1 thing worries me about the national parks, and to me they don't look that big of an area. maybe some of you guys who's been there can clear this up for me.

If anyone can also suggest some good camp sites in that area either with or without fees i would be most grateful, and some tips that could help me enjoy my experience even more while im over here.

thanks

gav

Hi Gavuk and welcome to Oz. Where are you from?

I'm not familiar with Kara Kara but when you get on the ground in Vic the area to detect is a little overwhelming - especially when you have a coil the size of a dinner plate. It certainly looks smaller on the map.

Good luck with the fishing. Hope you catch a cod. Just make sure you have a fishing licence for NSW (if you are fishing the Murray). Fishing inspectors are generally nice people but they won't accept being naive about the regulations as an excuse for not issuing you a fine.

Spinnerbaits, larger hard body lures and larger surface lures are all great ways to catch a cod. Purples, pink and black/red combinations are good starting colour choices.

Good luck with the fishing and the gold :Y:

google search for " free camping australia "

there is an app for Ipad / IPhones where it will navigate you to where campsites are , or google a list and take it with you if you dont carry tech.

do you know how to behave around snakes ?

1) dont try to kill them because its illegal and because 90 % of people bitten by a snake were trying to kill it. just move away and most of the time the snake will avoid you.

2) If youre walking under a tree of the type used by drop bears , you are legally required to cushion the fall of the bear however if he wants to eat you you're allowed to run away.

3) The above # 2 is a lie , drop bears are way too fast to run away from ( if they existed )

enjoy the trip :rainbow:

Thats great. Thanks Marksmen :Y:

Im from Wigan northwest Uk.

Kara Kara is just the start and we will move on to other nation parks.

Yes we have fishing licenses and we will do everything legit while we are here.

Thank you for the advice Northeast :Y:

lol Headsup and thank you all for the warm welcome.

I have read about the snakes and i would never provoke them and will stay well clear of them.

just a word of warning if you are sleeping on the ground roll all your bedding up during the day
at night make sure you check it again before getting into bed or you may have a sleeping partner you dont really want
also if on the ground or van/trailer check for spiders as well they like any animal like to be comfortable when they sleep
remember leave some for us locals
enjoy this country and stay safe

G'day mate and welcome to Australia
Firstly, you need a Fishing licence and a Miners Right (licence)
Get into a metal detector shop and get all you want to know about gold prospecting in Victoria.
There are metal detector shops in Maryborough, Bendigo and Ballarat.
Cheers, d4g

Welcome Gav and, if you are fishing in the Murray River or Ocean in S.A. you do NOT need a fishing license. If fishing in other States, you DO.

Also, in the River system, if you catch European Carp, they are listed as noxious and are not to be thrown back......

Paddys Ranges (just south of Maryborough) is another good spot to try. There's a campground with long drops there (off Karri Track - in a no prospecting area), but can get a little crowded at this time of year.
There are generally some members from PA about to show you the ropes. The golf and bowls club is good for an ale and a feed. A little further up the road towards Dunolly is Coiltek for all your prospecting needs.

Thank you all for the replies

we all have licenses for both prospecting and fishing in Vic.

once we find a camp site i will post it and anyone in the area wants join us for a cold 1 are more than welcome :)

Welcome to Oz gavuk. I noticed that you implied prospecting in National Parks. Please be aware that you are not allowed to prospect in ANY National Park in Australia. State forests and most crown land are not a problem unless otherwise stated. I can highly recommend the campground in the Paddy Ranges about 8 km south west of Marybourough as it is smack bang in the middle of a goldfield and easily accessible to many others within 1/2 hour or less. There are several supermarkets, hardware and prospecting stores as well as many other shops.

Have a great trip!

Oh, and stay out of the midday sun!

Gavuk, this is the place I sent you pics of. Very recommended.

I stand corrected for Vic BigWave, however I have been to Stuart Mill and the Kara Kara and if you look at the map, there is no prospecting allowed in the Kara Kara NP. Prospecting is allowed in the adjacent areas which are conservation areas. It may be splitting hairs, but it could mean avoiding a hefty fine.
