And my apologies for the 2nd hand nature of this, but it comes from a reliable source. I have a picture of the guys who found it holding the pans in the Minelab store in Melbourne, and sadly one of them passed away in 2014 so we will never know where he got it from. He was an acquaintance of my source of the story and pictures. (i'm reluctant to put up a picture of people I don't know on the public forum, but if you PM me I may share it with their faces blurred out.)

Its a bit of a slow day here and was reading through the 'Big Deposit' link and it reminded me of it.

All I know is it was 33 ounces sourced from the upper Tanjil river from approx 2009-2010.

Indeed. after a year of racing all around victoria myself - in about 20 odd trips (and I get to some out of the way places), i'm still only sitting on about 20grams of alluvials. :|

...Makes a nice rattle in the jar now though. I keep it in the fridge. I like my gold cold and fresh.... yesss my precioussss...

:D

Sorry if wrong place but Tanjil river in Gippsland is on the no go list ?( just for newbies that may want to give it a go with all that gold shown) would love to know what part of the river they got that from as my old man used to dredge the Tanjil full time some 30 years ago and never did that good. Any way asides from that thanks for sharing. It's nice to see full pans of gold?

I've been told stories of people finding dredging setups on the tanjil only a few years ago. I hope there only stories as the greedy will wreak it for us all.

Wreck what Bjay ? theres people dredging all over and no one even cares , least of all the dpi .

Mate, i care, you give me the info (privately if you'd prefer) on people dredging illegally on streams and i guarantee you i'll get the powers to be and the depi to act. Just gotta rattle the right cages and make em understand your serious. It's not good enough that some aholes are doing stuff that effs the environment and destroys future access for the rest of us.
If things are happening like that it's important that we scream blue murder to get the wreckers dealt with.

Yeah ? a smack on the hand with a wet bus ticket won't make em care , maybe they should be awarded for their bravery instead

Anyway it's just my opinion here but I believe far more damage is being done that is permanent and irreversible with people trailing non native and invasive weed seeds deep into pristine wilderness on their trail bikes and 4x4's , that is already changing the landscape forever .

I have heard reliably that there has been a recent encounter and "interference" with a vehicle that occurred between some innocent visitors to a State Forest in the Tanjil area who had haplessly wandered too close to some suspicious operators - the incident was said to have been reported to the Land Managers.

I'll agree with the invasive weeds and 4WD comment, most of the greedy buggers who thrash our creeks an rivers don't give a rat's. I've had lengthy chats with our local park rangers (in NE Vic) and they are willing to take action against illegal activities if they have proof that will stand up in court. Click, snap, whirr if you know what I mean. A conviction is a conviction and if they're caught more than once it piles up and the penalty increases. I'd love to dredge the spot I'm working now, but I won't and will just stick to a shovel and when I'm done with that a hand brush and probably face mask and snorkel. That's hardcore!

That is extreme . I would have called the police myself ?

Fair enough mate, but there's a big difference between getting a slap on the wrist from a court and the depi doing nothing as you stated. Most of the rangers etc that i've met are bloody keen bushmen and protectors of the bush and would never turn a blind eye to those acting illegally.
I'm certainly not having a go at you here in anyway arroya, i applaud your passion for wanting a pristine wilderness, but to call areas where 4wds and bikes are allowed to go as pristine is a fair stretch of the imagination. Wild perhaps, but not pristine.
Are you going to restrict fire trucks, bush walkers and land management vehicles from entering any wilderness areas because they will also have the potential to take invasive seeds etc on their boots and tyres? I'd bet my house on the fact that more weeds are spread into wilderness areas by birds shiting seeds than are ever spread via vehicle tyres.
Have you seen the damage that deer, wild horses and pigs do along waterways. Not to mention the destruction that wild dogs, fox and feral (and pet) cats do to the native wildlife. We can fence off and also punish (which we should do with full force i agree) feral 4wd and bikers, not so feral animals that are allowed to roam because we most city folk can't abide by those animals being shot.
Sorry for the rant mate :) :)

Maybe a job opportunity for some at the gates to all bush areas , it'll be like the airport but with steam cleaning all boots , tyres and orifices on site before entry lol . I know Scrounger it is a bit ridiculous but I was just making a point as to what is most damaging to the environment and it is certainly not a guy with a 2 inch dredge .

Hey whats in that red fire retardant crap elvis is dumping all over the countryside I wonder , might it be bad for fish eggs and frogs lol ?

Exactly, the concept of 'pristine wilderness' is a wonderful notion but by its very nature doesn't exist unless there's actually somewhere where man or non indigenous animals have never set foot or effected in some way. As you say, dropping fire retardents onto areas where local waterways are directly effected etc all have an impact as does any hard or low impact activity be that from cars, bikes, hiking, dredging, panning, detecting, fishing.
To my mind, no areas should be off limits totally, if some activity is doing irreversible damage then it shouldn't be allowed at all, if an activity is so intense it's damaging something that will take a very long time to recuperate then it should be very intensively managed to lessen that damage, and if people are doing willful damage outside the laws of an area then they should be dealt with harshly to set an example to other air heads that think it's ok to do as they please.
That's the trouble with rules and laws that are put in place to protect the environment that aren't enforced, the people that care will always do the right thing and the aholes will always do the wrong thing unless they see they're going to be caught and when caught punished severely.

I have it that the incident was reported to the Land Managers and YES the Police were made aware of the incident as well......
