ok honestly if YOU were presented with this opportunity, would YOU have donated them or sold them? just wondering where people stand on this

You would have to donate them to a museum as they in my opinion belong to the state.

Maybe you could keep a few ,as there seems to be hundreds

I would donate the silver and keep the gold :p

Im sure he kept a couple for himself for the collection. I would have just kept a few samples and donated the rest. But I would ask for some equipment but not ask for the half mil euros

If it were our government I'd have negotiated for say 10% GST, 2.5% medical levy, 45% income tax, a per coin finders tax of say 10%, stamp duty of 10% spot bullion price, a 2.5% handling fee and 5% environmental levy........ I would give them the remaining 15% to live on. :)

According to the world bank ,(7 years ago) ,the true tax rate here was 61% and I don't see that being spent honestly.

So in all honesty to the gummint I would subtract my consultants fee , environmental remediation levy (filling the hole) ,and stomp duty ( that's me tamping the dirt down with my foot after I fill in the hole) which all comes to 501,000 euros.

So I send them a bill for 1000 euros ( they are exempt gst )

And I keep the coins .

the article says he unearthed 47,000 of them

I personally dont think the museum "needs" 47,000 of them. Maybe donate 1000 so they are preserved and looked after for everyone to see and admire and sell the rest for my own selfish personal reasons  :D

Give the museum a few thousand, keep a few hundred for your finds collection, then melt the rest down.

that would be a crime 8.(

the coins are worth hundreds or thousands more than the weight of the silver scrap

Maybe so but who you going to sell them to?
