Loamer,

The military produced 3D Topographical data is called DTED. It was produced via Space Shuttle radar photography, it can be used to generate 3D images such as you show from a map in Oziexplorer and then linked out to Ozi3D. The file can be saved as a bitmap or native Ozi3D as a .3D1.

The usual file format for 3D printing is .STL so somewhere along the way it would need to be imported to software as 3D1 and then saved as STL or a file format compatible to the printer.

Other 3D maps I can't attest to.

The scariest thing to be invented for a while, make no mistake it is a game changer. Just like the internet, or electricity, it will change the world for good in a very short amount of time. Pretty soon there will be whole countries that will have their economies shattered by the 3-D printer. Soon we will print our own pans.... Before too long we will be printing our own detectors and sat phones to take on field trips. We are already buying these in school now and teaching our kids how to use them.

Technology, lol. however, they only print the passive items such as the plastic bits, pans yes detectors no.

Well not at the moment, but............

What a great tool! add Arduino for the robotics & produce a little diggerman.
Imagination limited.

More product photos please John.

The game changer will be printing metal, stainless parts
When such printers are available for $1000. This is when
The world will change and maybe not in a good way.

Can you imagine what can be printed?

Its a long way off yet.

Thought about buying one but could not see a market
For the plastic parts produced due to time it takes to
Print, cost of materials and how smooth the finish is. You
Could also breach copyright or patent law depends on
What your making.

For hobby work its awesome fun.

Such machines will become very handy for doctors printing
Particular parts for the human body and the military or
Other organisations working in remote locations where
Specific parts are needed. You would not need to carry
Boxes of spares. Just print on demand...

Copyright and patent laws breached. ..correct. Such an antiquated and self serving set of laws anyway based on greed and self interest. Behold the age of replication and creativity that serves men not a man. Limitless potential in these sorts of machines, one good friend of mine has had several in succession over the last few years developing many different products for industry including super bearings, and filtration parts that can only be "printed" to be made. He developed a valve using his engineering background thanks to these machines and after making a substantial amount of capital selling it now makes many things at cost to help much like the hand outlined here. He makes a living from electrical systems for industry and software to match. None of these things would be possible 20 years ago, and excites me every time we catch up with all sorts of new developments, we live in a great age.
