Last week while travelling home at night we were hit by a big cow jaywalking at excessive speed.

Fortunately I managed to miss her with the front but she hit in the side and did quite a bit of damage to my recently repaired trailer.

The quads were lucky to come away without damage.

At first glance I thought it was just the aluminium sheeting that was damaged but when it came time to repair it I realised the top of the steel trailer side had been pushed in as well.

I have a hydraulic Snap-on porta power set just for jobs like this.

Well that was until I tried to push the panel out. The hydraulic ram seal gave way and ended up just making an oily mess.

If I couldn't push then I had to pull it so I made up this little puller and inserted it through a slot at the bottom of the side.

Then I placed the trailer between two of the shade sail supporting columns and connected the Come-along. I chained the other side of the trailer to the other column.

Even after pulling the base out the middle of the panel was badly stretched out of shape.

It might look like open heart surgery but I can assure you that the incisions are only skin deep

The welder gave me a bit of trouble because something blocked my teflon mig gun liner but I managed to push the wire through the steel liner. Overall I'm pretty happy with my days work. Now it just needs a good layer of red dust :)

That's enough to make you snap-off! For what they charge for those you'd hope they would work!

I bought this in the 80's so that's not too bad. I just hope it's covered by the Snap-on lifetime warranty.

I cant for the life of me believe the amount of bad luck you have mate.

Could'a been worse, with the screaming cow plowing right the way through and taking the quads out through the other side with it... sh!t, fuel, & metal spread out over a few hundred yards..... much better just the way it was :D

Thanks for the warning. Perhaps I can find something to do inside the trailer. Things inside seem to come out ok :)

I should wait for dry ground but Mrs M is away at the moment and I'd really like to get some dryblowing done. I reworked a pile that I previously put through because it was the driest dirt about and I wanted to see what I missed before adjusting the air speed. The weight shown is not from today's work.

Phil Box, you are a remarkable engineer my friend!
Umm noticed a difference in the discharge to the conveyer, with number 2 not having much dirt??
Fine tuning, or I'm seeing it wrong?!

Yes I saw that on the video but not at the scene. It might be the light or the damp soil might have been blocking up the outlet from the bin. I'll keep an eye on that but the feed should be identical.

I put another pile through yesterday from a new patch. The results are still disappointing. I took a rough measurement of the output pile, it's a cone 6m across and 2m tall.

1620791933_30_tons.jpg

Using the following formula it works out to 18.85m

1620792265_cone.jpg

Using 1.6 tonnes to the metre it comes out at 30T and then there's the heavier stone that's discarded so perhaps 35T in total.

I'll move to another spot today where I've spread the dirt t dry. I know a lot will still be too wet but it should give me some idea of how much gold is there. Everywhere seems to have just a sprinkling of gold so I'm starting to doubt my collection rate.

1620792591_shot.jpg

I been advised by a few to put some lead shot in to sample it so here it is.

1620792660_lead.jpg

22 pieces weighing 6g of lead painted white so that it's easier to identify. I'll toss these into the bin while it's working and see what comes out the other side :)

Today was a messy day. The timer on the fish pond light packed it in last night and after a thorough search I went to bed thinking about where the two new timers might have got to. I called Mrs M this morning and she pointed me in the right direction.

While she was on the phone she reminded me that she was coming home in a week to start packing to go away. We're off on a treasure hunting trip out Coolgardie with a club early in June.

1620986651_trommel1.jpg

That jogged my memory. I'd told her I'd try to make a little trommel to sift the dirt looking for coins and small treasure. We usually use the mesh BBQ but it tends to add a bit more grit to the steaks next time around.

1620986786_trommel2.jpg

The first thing was to find the necessary bits and pieces. I took the usual trip out to CueBunno and brought back a wiper motor from a Subaru Liberty and an air cleaner from some type of machine.

1620986910_trommel3.jpg

A simple job of pulling an aircleaner element apart took me about an hour.

1620986975_trommel4.jpg

I had some offcut from a sheet of aluminium that was suitable so I sketched out what I thought should do the job.

1620987059_trommel5.jpg

A few bends and a spot of weld and it's coming together. I had welder trouble the other day when the teflon gun liner blocked up. I'm using the steel gun liner for the aluminium wire so that kept me busy with wire tangles all afternoon.

1620987201_trommel6.jpg

I got an oven shelf too for the grizzly but I think I need to go back and get a second one because my hopper ended up a bit big :) I was hoping to get a bit more done but some old friends dropped in this afternoon and stayed till dark. The mossies will be out now so tomorrow will have to do.
It's only a tiny trommel so I'm not sure yet if I'll bother with the electric motor but that'll depend on my mood in the morning
